Hi,

I have several 113h reels and one of them when in free spool sending the jig down into the deep makes a sound almost like something is intermittent rubbing /clicking. It happens off and on and when I play with the side plate bearing sometimes it goes away.

I thought it was the side plate bearing and the whole bearing and cap from this reel to a new one and the other way replacing the new one on the problem reel and the sound didn't go away so that rules out the bearing.

Again only on free spool and intermittent. Only one problem reel.

Any ideas/part (#s) that may be causing this? I can rebuild them just need to know where to look for the problem once I open it.

Thanks
Marc

Penn 113h

Marc, this is a fairly common problem. If the left bearing is left too loose;it allows partial disengagement of the spool into the pinion bearing. Occationally, this causes damage to the backside of the pinion gear or the spool "double D". Disassemble and inspect the pinion gear for wear at the point it engages the spool. If it is damaged the pinion is available seperatly from Penn.
A root cause of this problem is engaging the reel at high spool speeds. This tends to bend the pinion yoke and this futher exasperates the problem.Always inspect the pinion yoke when disassembling. It is only a few bucks to change.Smoothdrag offers a stainless pinion yoke as a replacement. It is strong but sometimes has to be fit and polished to work properly.
