You can swap the 109's twin grip handle with a Penn peerless #9's counter balance handle. (torpedo type) The 109 and the 9 were the same reel with a few minor changes. IE spool type and reel foot size.

The newer model #9 had a paddle type counter balance handle. I'm not sure if that will fit.

The part # for the counter balanced power handle that will fit the Penn 109 & Peerless #9 is: 24N-160

You can get it at www.pennparts.com for $8.75

I would also get the part #: 168-9 Wrench for the 109 if you do not have already as it only cost $0.90

Is my best bet eBay for something like that?
That depends on the type of handle your looking for. The site Todd posted will have the paddle type handle. If you want the earlier torpedo handle, then fleabay might be a long shot for you.

Here's Todds link direct to the part number. Penn part # 24N-160 <----clicky there.

Penn part # 24N-160 is the power handle with the more modern grip and is not a paddle handle.

With that said, if it were me, I go with the handle Lattitudechange posted the link from ebay on.

The black softer type grip on the 24N-160 is more comfortable, but I really like the the "old school" look of the 24-160 tordedo style handle grip

I went with the 24N-160 because i didnt feel like waiting for the auction to end.

I bought the reel off of eBay a month or two ago, put some 15 lb Spectron on it and figured i would let my kids use it party boat fishing. I only paid $25 for it. I broke it out last week just to make sure that it works and I found that i liked the low retrieve for fluking, hated the crappy handle. The fact that it doesnt have free spool doesnt bother me as much as i thought it would...all i am doing is dropping it over the side of the boat anyway.

Good luck with your 109.

I just refurbished a Penn 10 Mag this winter that I got on Ebay for $12 (including shipping). I cleaned it up, added new drags and relubed and now have a great little reel for the kids to use.

I leave an old Penn 155 Beach Master, 140 Squidder, 9M and now a 10 levelwind on the boat all season as they are user friendly, durable and easy to maintain. Plus if they are dropped, stolen or whatever, I am not worried as I haven't spent more than $20 (including refurbing) on any of these reels which I pick up at tag sales or ebay (if I find a great deal).

Refurbed older Penns are a much better alternative to buying cheap chinese made POS's reels for people looking for reels in the under $50 price range. Plus refurbing these old USA made reels gives us fisherman something to due in the winter.
