Guys, I stopped in Peace Token Tackle in Queens today and chatted with my pal Mike whom I fish with on occasion and he discussed how he is constantly fishing different rigs while fluking and other fishing in order to try to maximize his customer's benefit. His rigs are unlike many companies or tackle shops you walk in. They have stood the test of time and are well made. You don't have to worry about anything failing or cheap terminal breaking. I usually make my own rigs like many fellow noreasters but when I went on my first cod trip last year he was there and brought the gear needed and some rigs to try. They were excellent and caught fish all day. If anyone is diving into a new species, I suggest you stop in or give Mike a call to give you some help. He's been fishing for many many moons and has caught them all.

Mike was also one of the only guys in America to have the Yozuri Metallic Sardine after Yozuri stopped making them. He still carries them and while others are making them too, I think it's fair to say Mike's look the closest to original. This has been my go-to jig for tuna for years and we've been fortunate to be able to use them.

The store holds every thing you can imagine for fluke jigging and is really a jigger's haven for all sorts of fish. Of all the tackle shops I've been to, and I've seen them all, Mike carries the most variety of spro bucktails in every color and some you've never heard of lol (I saw the weirdest looking spro mudkicker color today). He has a lot of different light fluking rods and his famous 8'6" loomis tuna stick.

He also carries the 8ft ugly stick for those on a limited budget for cod/tuna, and I believe the rod is only 65 bucks. If I had to buy all my tackle over I would buy one of these with a 4/0 senator and get to work. Mike told me of a hot tuna bite with yellowfin and longfin where the mates were so busy gaffing fish that Mike decided to swing some tuna in with his 8ft ugly stick during a wild bite years ago.

Mike is a gentleman and willing to help anyone who asks so feel free to give him a call and check out the website.

9 LB Fluke taken this past June on a Peace Token H/L bucktail rig in 40 feet of water S. of Jones. One of many nice fish caught this year on Mikes custom tied rigs. His store is one of the best and you can't beat the help he gives you. Super nice guy to.

8' Ugly Stick

TunaFever

Hi,

If I can offer a suggestion to anyone buying the 8' Ugly Stick for cod fishing, Immediately remove the tip top and have a heavy duty Fuji installed. These rods work great and will last a long time but I have seen the tip top go south on the first trip.

Neil, that's a great suggestion. I haven't owned one because I have accumulated a collection of all the fancy stuff but I think that is a great suggestion for anyone starting out.

I want to add that Mike is the only shop that has 4x gamakatsu trebles in stock anywhere near my area as I've tried them all and even tried ordering from SRMO. I refuse to fish with owner 4x trebles anymore as all they = is lost fish. I have heard that they break but Mike has landed tuna to 270 on them so I have no fear. They come in black and silver which I wasn't aware of.

It's strange because I prefer gama trebles over owner's but I prefer owner siwash over gamakatsu siwash.

On an inshore note there has been great fishing off of NJ for fluke. Not really a great bite of a lot of fish but of BIG FISH. On the Jamaica II I was cursed by witnessing a 10lb 11oz fluke caught directly next to me! to win the Jamaica II monthly. There have been a bunch of nice fish in the 6lb to 10lb range and it should die out soon so get them while they're hot. I'm thinking about going tomorrow morning depending on today's report. Mike's teasers and jigs have been producing well down there.

I made the trip to Woodside today. I have not been there in a long time. Almost forgot how small that shop is. And I found out that the summer is not a great time to visit because there is NO air conditioning in that place!!! Man was I sweating!! My next trip to Woodside won't be until the air temps cool off to at least 60 degrees...

I do like that shop though. The owner is a master rig/knot tyer and features many nice rigs pre-made that look killer for fluke. He is also a HUGE bottom fisherman who loves to travel and fish everywhere in the world. Ya gotta love his enthusiasm! You will find items for jigging tuna that you have not seen anywhere else...

My other reason for liking this shop is that he is well equipped with the types of toys & artificials that I love to use for bagging big fluke. Nothing like jigging big fluke in June & July! He has a ton of cool tricks to put fillets on your table...

I only spent about $50 today but when I get bored over the winter after the boats are pulled, I will definitely be back to replenish my fluke tackle that I lost this summer!

I would put his shop in my top 10 for this area!

Hey Kil, I'm not gonna swear to this but I thought I was there at the same exact time! I arrived right around 10:00am and was there close to an hour. Did you see a guy with a royal blue t-shirt and black shorts? That was me...

I saw a few people come in and out. What were you wearing?

Hey, Eddie! :)

I was at Peace Token today, picking up some tuna jigs. I was looking for my favorite Yozuri sardines, which I have trouble finding elsewhere. Got a couple and then picked up some skirts for my Lavjig trebles. Mike's got a selection of skirts that no one else has, and so, I loaded up on some of those. Then, I noticed the custom fluke jigs he has, which are very nice. So naturally, I got a few of those for next season.

Check out some of these custom fluke jig and bait rigs from the PT website:

And these custom cod rigs:
Custom Cod Rigs

I then started a conversation with Mike about the 270 eyeball he recently took on jigging gear and to talk with him about a debate :))) I'm having with Kil about whether it's possible to take a true GBFT (500 pound model) with jigging gear. I turn around and who's standing behind me listening to the conversation ... Kil! :)

Not sure of the time, but it was early.

I agree, the place doesn't look like much, but Mike certainly has it packed with great stuff that you can't find elsewhere. A lot of the rigs are custom made by him and are definitely unique.

Best.

Dick

Dick, maybe Kil was a bit off with his time frame. I know I would not miss you and I know that conversation did not take place while I was in the shop.

Would have been nice to see you again. Guess we gotta wait 'til the next Montauk trip!
