What are the PB options of porgy fishing in MA around the Memorial weekend (5/23-26)? Helen-H seems fully booked for that weekend. What about New Bedford? Viking starts May 16 there. Is OnsetChief still running from there? Any other choices?

I hate to say this but its a terrible time to go porgy fishing on this weekend. If the weather is good the crowds are going to be horrible. Fishing to early to predict. My position stated if your going anyway and plan on going home during this period, for me there is no other choice but the viking fleet in new bedford, has to save you 2 hours travel time getting off the cape. Should easily limit out on porgies here as well as hyannis. I will be goint later in the week when the traffic eases off.

Hi Willie,
Agree, but it's more like a get-away vacation time for my family.

New Bedford boats fish different area from Hyannis boats, right? Which area is more productive, or about the same? I was on Onset Chief couple years ago, inside the bay was very slow pick then capt moved out to a deep water wreck and it was non-stop hot bite there.

If you fished the onset chief, the viking fishes the same waters. I think they catch better in Hyannis, but I never had a problem getting my limit in new bedford even when it was 100. Always got a few large seabass to go with the porgies, an 8lb black, as well as keeper stripers. I also think the motels in area may be more readily available. Either way you can't go wrong.

Results of the 2 day fishing in Hyannis this past weekend

Wow, totally incredibile 2 day fishing!

Drove up to Hyannis Friday and fished on Helen-H 6 hour afternoon trip (full boat). Very short boat ride (15-20 minutes) and shallow using 4-5 oz sinker. Porgy bite was pretty consistent and some sea bass mixed in. There were times that I need to cast out to get bite but I got my limit by the end of the trip.

Saturday I went with my son on Hy-line 6 hour afternoon trip (Sea Swan, full boat also). Boat supplied clam (good salted one) and fresh squid. Short boat ride out, and the bite started out slow. Capt moved the boat to further out, right by where Helen-H, Angler and other fleet were. Then it's simply red-hot bite went on forever throughout the entire trip. We started with clam and soon switched over to just squid strip because of the hot bite. My son got tired reeling in big porgy and he even got a double-header sea bass. Based on Kil said, I tried a 3-hook sabiki rig with a 4oz diamond jig at bottom to see whether it worked. No bite on the rig until I put on squid strip, and I started catching left and right. Even got a triple-header by leaving the rod in rod-holder when helping out my son. So as tired as I was, I just casted out and stuck it in rod-holder until the rod tip bounced crazy to reel the fish in.

Overall it was a really fun fishing and vacation trip for me and my family. My wife got to walk around in main street and the Mall, and my son had his best fishing trip ever.

As far as the traffic goes, it was not bad between New Bedford and Hyannis, maybe we beat the traffic by arriving early (Friday morning) and leaving early (Sunday morning).
