whats with this place??? I had 1 good day of fishing down there last year beating up on the kingfish...

Ive been there too many times over the last few months and Ive caught NOTHING not a sea robin no nothing....

all I ever hear about is how good this dock " used to be" but so far.. no dice.. what gives??

I mean my only guess is that its shallowed up over the years and thats the main problem along with the lack of water clarity....

I moved into the area this year and tried out the docks on Ocean Ave on the full moon, granted it was windy as **** not even one solid nibble. The local B & T on River & Division told me that other anglers were having an ok time and mentioned the kingfish as well. I spoke with one of the guys down at the dock and he said most nights you can get blues. WTF? Not even a shy bite.

Is it too early for the kingfish?

not sure as Ive caught kingfish at weird times... honestly I think the best time down there is the top of the incoming, first of the outgoing... cuz Ive been there at all other stages of the tide except for those and had no luck....

another problem down there is too many people walking around... I tried keeping a rod in the water with a sinker and a hook leaning on the bench and casting and retriving a bucktail with another, and people walk by and get clotheslined by my 20lb braid.... so stressful LOL

ok, I know which spot you mean. Out of curiosity, I've been using google maps to seek out spots when I haven't been able to drive around, but on the map for the area, right beside the L there seems to be a formation of rocks to it's left on the map. Do you know if that is so? I mean it seems plausible to fish off of there. Any/All help would be great.

Sandspit? Mascot? Are these slang names for some of these spots or am I missing the obvious?

Sandspit, is a Marina with a fishing dock, as well as two jetties.. the east jetty is fishable if you are extremely well equipped with korkers and good balance and no beer..

The west jetty is long and flat and more user friendly...

Mascot dock aka the "L" dock is in very shallow water until the end of the "L"..

I know of no rockpiles near the L dock but Sandspit borders the Patchogue river. I've had better luck at nearby docks but I'll leave it at that.

Thank you for responding, the jetties you just mentioned I saw yesterday when I went there. Thank you for elaborating on that part.

was at the L dock tonight.... saw some small crabs around but what had me a little excited was tons of bunker around the dock around 10pm,there were small schools of bunker, roughtly 20-30 fish in each school swimming in super tight circles... nothing seemed to be bothering them though... but my thinking was why is bunker swimming so close to a dock in shallow water... I was thinking that maybe some bass or blues were pinning them in so close but the bunker werent jumping around at all.... shows what I know about bunker LOL... I was told that they swim in tight circles when they feel threatened, but at the same time I looked up on google that they swim in tight circles when feeding...... any thoughts?

I know that last year we would hit heards of those bunker right by the mouth of the river but i never have seen them that close to the dock.

What kind of fish are brought up around that dock? I think it was last year or the year before that i remember seeing a lady catch a huge bass out of there but thats it. I can see Kingfish but wow, i never thought that the bay produced any more kingfish. As a kid about 10 years ago i used to go fishing with my parents off of hecksher park via boat and catch a ton of kingfish and weaks. Man i miss those days!

So i guess you guys are throwing bunker and clam at this dock?

I have only fished 1x there so far, used mackerel at the time, but it was a crappy night with heavy winds and I couldn't discern whether or not the bait was even getting nibbled on. The b & t nearby did mention clams were having an ok response but nothing spectacular.

One of the guys downthere said blues were common as of late.
