A few members and myself have been kicking around the idea of a rating system of sorts for party/charter boats, or even getting a seperate forum started.I am aware of the potential cons of this, like if someone has a personal beef with a particular boat, they could use this forum for needless bashing. But, the moderators control the content of the other forums, and delete posts deemed inappropriate.A fair, HONEST forum or rating system will only serve to inform anglers as to which boats are producing, who provides superior service, ect. That's being honest, not "bashing".This will be especially helpful to newbies who are generally unfamiliar with the local angling scene, and tend to start fishing from open boats due to lack of equipment, experience, or knoweldge of fishing. If I were going saltwater angling for the first time on LI, I would want to know, from as impartial a source as possible, whcih boat will do its best to help me learn while at the same time produce fish.Let's be honest, there are a number of boats which, shall we say, are not particularly welcoming to inexperienced anglers. And, while we're being honest, I think consumers, so to speak, are the best sources of IMPARTIAL info, not the owners of businesses (in this case, boat capts.) or, frankly, those who depend on the businesse's advertising dollars. I'm pretty new to this site, so I'm not sure if this subject has been discussed before, if so, I apologize. But, those of us talking about this were wondering what other Noreast members think, any thoughts?

Interesting idea but I'm not sure if that would be fair to the Noreast to ask them to host it. I'm sure that there are some captains who choose to spend their advertising dollars in other publications and not in the Noreast. I don't think it would be fair to George to ask him to provide free publicity to boats that won't support his magazine. I also don't think it would be fair to those boats who do spend their advertising dollars here to provide a place for negative publicity.

In theory the idea is perfect. But in reality you'll more than likely get false negative reports from the competition.

Sorry But That's One We're Staying Away From!

Bacala,

We have built this site from the bottom up with member input, and while yours sounds like a good idea, I can tell you we have no intention of implementing any type of a Party/charter boat ratings section at Noreast.com.

Theanks for the suggestion and for visiting our website.

Party ratings

A great idea in principal but I can certainly see all of the potential problems as well. I started seriously partyboat fishing two years ago and some decent info would have saved me a lot of hassle (and bad trips) and might have turned me on to some good boats a lot sooner. However, my experience has been that rating a boat is such a highly subjective matter that two guys standing shoulder to shoulder catching the same fish with the same mates might have a completely different opinion of the experience. Personally I find that the fellow fisherman on a boat can have as much or more influence on the enjoyment of a trip as the mates/capt/fish. My only hard rule is to stay away from boats with pre-printed $8.00 off coupons (on a $35 fare). Not a good sign ;)

Gentlemen-
Thanks for all the opinions so far.I'm actually thinking that "rating" may be the wrong expression, but I still don't see why a forum can't be done ( there needs to be guidelines, like the other forums, you are correct George).Madscientist, if you go into the NY reports and look at a post titled "Sheepshead Bay" from either yesterday or today, sorry I can't remember the exact date, you will see why I think that customers deserve at least a general knoweldge as to the more reputable boats, weather in terms of fish catching ability or service. The bottom line is, no paying fare on an open boat should EVER be told "I didn't get tangled, why should I untangle it" by a mate (see the abovementioned report). This is the type of info (positive, also) that I believe customers have the right to know.

It's already here.....

There already is a forum for this. It's right here. If somebody has a good trip and wants to tell the rest of us about it they usually do, and the same goes for those who seem to have had disappointments. Of course it's not in an as much of an all in one place concise format such as what you are suggesting, and you might have to scroll through some other types of posts, but if the "Subjects" are detailed properly the information would be available. There are only so many Forums that can be opened in order to keep things functioning in somewhat of a simple to view process. You can only get so definitive. Before you know it there would be requests for Forums that would be for "Anglers that use black bucktails on a full moon" as opposed to "Anglers that use chartreuse...." Not that the Title of a Forum in anyway seems to stop some from posting what ever they want wherever they want anyway. Just look at what the CAPTWALT traveling flea market has done to the "For Sale" Forum.

Richard-
Hey, I got back on Sun. Had a good time, but it's just too far from the ocean! I may be going either this weekend, or mbey early next week. Hopefully, one of those days is good for you.

Note To CAPTWALT:that is LOW, attacking someone, then deleting your post so it looks like Nightcaster attacked first.Be a man, you know you were wrong, just admit it.

Never Work

We flew this idea out now about 10 or 12 times and it would never work. Most of us know that fishing is not always
catching and I've been skunked on my favorite boats on days that you would have thought the fish would be stacked up.

It hurts to lose a buck and gripes can arise when it comes to money. Since I do not have my own boat, YET, all my fishing is done on Party Boats and I've been seriously fishing them for 6 years now, beginning in March on the Snow Goose II which docks in Ossining on the Hudson for the spring run, to fishing December on the DayBreak III for Blacks.

I've learned which boats to go on for a good productive day but also which boats fit my personality. Somedays I want a leisurely fishing day and somedays I'm looking for slambang action.

The only drawback is that I've spent a lot of money trying boats that in retrospect I would never go on again, but that's how you learn.

It's good to know that someone has some common sense and good taste.

Thanks Bacala for watching my back, and to you Chris for your dilligence. If we left it up to CAPTWALT we would have to change the name of the board to nor-ebay
