overloading the rod- how many sizes up do you go?

2195 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  yonkers
have an 8wt, 9'- using a 9wt forward,
intermediate line. someone suggested i go up to a 10wt line. still a newbie and don't have my double haul timing
(read line speed) down pat but the
9wt line casts a helluva lot better than the 8wt line that i originally bought wth the rod. the person who suggested the 10wt thought it would improve my casting. only real way to tell is to put it on my rod and test it out. any thoughts and or suggestions?

Overloading

I've overloaded as much as three line sizes when conditions dictate (wind). The only true way to find out what wieght line to use is to try them out. You may not have to got to a 10wt., you may be better off with a 9wt line with a heavier foward section. My suggestion to you is to go to one of your local dealers and try out a couple. If they are a good shop they should have demos on hand. If not any of the Orvis stores around are great for trying different lines.
