I just got an OTI 5'6" 600g jigging blank I ordered.
It looks much stiffer than my 5' custom jigging rod from top part of two-piece 80 lbs popping blank, which I would rate to 60 - 80 lbs.
I am going to cut one foot from butt and make a 4'4" - 4'6" rod like Hot's Wei's short jigging rod to target tuna or AJ upto 100 lbs.

I would think that a certain point a rod becomes too short, specifically when a big powerfull fish takes a last minute run at the side or under the boat...I always like enough rod that i can stick it in the water when not trolling to avoid getting cut off by the hull....but I guess for long periods of extreme jigging like u do all the weight that u can save is good.

I saw a mistake. I like to cut one foot not two feet from the butt.
Hot's Wei short rod is 4'8" and I'd like to make a rod as short as the Wei for experimentation.
I compared two and it looks OTI's 600g is a little stiffer and has more backbone.
Losing tuna while fighting is not a problem any more as I intend to release them except a few fish to eat. I experimented with short rods for tuna jigging. When tuna make circle under the boat, it is not comfortable feeling at all with short rods, but I could manage it.

What reel and # line are you planning on using for this blank?

Just curious..

thanks

ErnieIt will be a spinning rod. If I target big tuna and need line capacity, I'll use Stella 20000, but I feel the rod is more balanced with a smaller reel like Stella 8000. Other than big tuna, Stella 8000 should work.

Here is a picture of tips of 400g Jigging Master, 500g 4'8" Hot Wei World and 600g 5'6" OTI blank (from the bottom).
Jigging Master tips are much thicker than Hot Wei and OTI blank, but the tip section of Hot Wei and OTI is stiffer.
Any rod shorter than 5' is not for everybody though it is fun to play with it. However I like the concept of Hot Wei short rod and try to make a short rod from OTI blank which I feel an excellent blank for the purpose. I am going to discuss with Rodwinder how to design custom rod from the blank. I might go even shorter. :)
My question is the short, thin rod can take beating while fighting big fish as there is not much room to disperse the pressure.

I met Rodwinder and delivered my blanks.
I asked the butt section is about 2 inch shorter than Hot Wei's as that is my natural position while jigging and fighting as I have short arms. The total length is about same as 4'8" Hot Wei World.

Very interesting about these new shorter rods

Paul: We do get a decent number of tuna well over 100 lbs if you move 20 miles south from where we fished last season. Might like to see one of these on the Hooked Up II for bigger night canyon yellowfin as we had them in the 80-100 lb plus range on glow in the dark jigs last season that beat up our anglers pretty good but mainly for the bluefin over 125 lbs and up.

John,
The short 5' prototype Smith rod was tested on your Hooked Up II in 2006. I caught several tuna on the short rod and I was pretty impressive the short rod though it was nor comfortable when tuna were under the boat. on Nov 4 trip on the Hooked Up II,As there were not much going on until 2:00 am, I went in the cabin for a rest for a while and Eddie, mate used my 5' Smith rod. On th first drop he hooked up a tuna which turned out to be a 80 lbs bigeye and let other fisherman fight the fish. I was waiting for landing my first bigeye for many years and I blew my chance. :)
On the same trip we caught world record false albacore.

-80 lbs bigeye caught on 5' prototype Smith rod.
