I was telling Ronzo that I remember as as a boy I used to throw a large rock into the boat basin to break the skim ice that covered all the water in the late winter/early spring; and flip a bait in the opening and pull out huge flounder. The Jones Beach Piers used to be good for a few fish on a balmy winter day. So going out won't necessarily be a waste of time. Stocks are a tiny fraction of what they used to be so don't expect much. It's good to get out though if the weather is relatively nice. I'll go to the Shinne**** Canal. I hate crowds but some people are really nice and it's a ritual for me by now.

here's the scoop, and i'm talking about the west end. the last few years, the first flounders in jamaica bay have been taken in broad channel proper, between the yacht club and the train bridge. this year should be different.

traditionally, this 10-15 foot water would be too cold. early season action centered around 30-40 foot holes in the bay.

where ? the real silver hole, holes in the pumpkin patch, holes in the back bay by five towns, behind the back side of the rockaways, etc. look at a chart, find some deeper water with some current flow, chum like **** and you might catch a few.

my guess is that few will be caught opening day, good luck.
