I love reading the stories about the old Sheepshead Bay and the people from that time. :) I remember some of those people. I seem to remember reading a story you wrote about Red, but I cannot find it. Is there anything about him?

HERE ARE THE TWO ARTICLES ABOUT RED-

These two articles talk about the greatest bottom fishermen in the northeast, Stu 'Red' Mark. The first one was written by him, the second one by myself. Enjoy both of them, because there is no fishermen who has accomplished many of the things he has done catching fish, and years later being the driving force for developing the live blackfish trade.

Steve EC- NY's fishing historian

Good morning-

Benny, I also love all of EC's terrific articles and stories of how our pastime, and the fishing industry in NY, used to be. You will simply not find the information and nostalgia that we have in the Wheelhouse forum anywhere else, be it online or in print.

To that end, the real reason for me replying to this thread is that I think it is imperative that every member here who feels the same about EC's forum needs to make their opinion known to the site's management. Let them know that it is ok for some people on a predominately rec fishing site to be nonetheless supportive of legal commercial fishing, and allow commercial fishermen to present their view of things ( note that very rarely do you see a commercial fisherman reflexively bashing recs, the way you see so many recs do at the mere mention of "commercial fishing"). Explain to the mamagement of the site that the Wheelhouse forum is unique, and contains one of a kind information that cannot be found anywhere else. I would think that Noreast would love to have an asset such as that as part of their website, but then again, what do I know?

So, if you feel that the In the Wheelhouse forum is a great asset to this website, if you believe that a fishing website should have more of what EC posts and less threads about what people are eating for dinner, or doing this weekend, or other nonsense, stand up and be counted!!!!

Thanks for the info EC, it was great reading the articles. It was nice to see some of the old pictures from years back. It is amazing the quantity of fish that were caught by these guys, almost unbelievable. It is a shame that the fishing is not like it was back then. I believe that it was these boat captains and fishermen from the 70's and 80's that really put Sheepshead Bay on the map. This was one of the most popular times for fishing in the area. The amount of boats that were available to fish on was fantastic. You had your choice of which ones to go on, and all had customers. Now there is only a handfull of boats there. The good old days are truly gone. :(

Don't be such a pessimist Benny, these days aren't so bad. When was the last time you had a bad day on the water? Sure the fishing is not as good as it was but we have to adapt. It's tougher on the comms than us but I see nothing wrong with targeting bigger fluke and blacks and being satisfied with a few big ones instead of smaller fish. As far as the experts in the field, in the coming years you'll be telling stories about some of the current guys who will be thought of as legends down the road. I can't tell you how much I've learned from some of these guys over the last few years, and all are very knowledgeable and more than willing to help. I know its not the same as years gone by but the Bay is still on the map and it ain't so bad. Enjoy!

SHB is not dead yet. It's not what it was, but is still alive. Most people nowdays think that the 70's & 80's were the heydays of the bay. I'm to young to remember but I have read stories about the bay in the early 1900's. Big 150ft or more double & triple decker party boats that sailed with 100's of people on board. During this era people would jam these boats because they could catch a sack full of fish to bring home for the family all at a cost of less than a buck. It made economic sense for these fishermen to go out & catch food. I've read that the most popular trips were for giant seabass that they sailed down to Atlantic City from Sheephead Bay. If someone has access to these old time stories & pictures I would love for them to post them here. That truly must have been the heyday's of SHB not to take anything away from the boats, captains, and crews that most of us fondly remember. You can see some of these old time pictures & more at mels-place.com. Click on contents then Mike's Maritime Memorabilia and sit back & enjoy.

I have viewed that site many times(Mel's Place) it is a great site to view the old boats and it tells you how many different names they had over the years. Some of the party boats we ride on now were some well known boats of years past, just with different names. A lot of history there.

the resturant called ROSS.

Does anyone remember the resturant called ROSS across the street from the fleet during the 60's ? they had some great 5 to 6 foot paintings hanging inside,, of striped bass hanging on the bottom ,.in between rocks & bolders. that always impressed me to this very day.i would hake to think of those masterpieces were throw away and rotted away in a city landfill. also the bar was shaped like the bow of a boat. classic place.sad there is nothing close to that today. and how about the old capt.walters on bedford & emmons aves. hanging out waiting for the boats to arrive to the dock blowing their horns and people running to the dock to buy fresh fish from the days catch. no size limits,no DEC, no B.S. just wholesome fun... jb
