We all know the fishing down in New York and Jersey can be terrific, but what about kayak fishing up here in Massachusetts and Rhode Island?

One of the good spots to troll a tube-and-worm and to chunk herring is Salem Sound, near Manchester. The put-in is in Manchester Harbor, just behind the police station. It's then roughly a two-three mile paddle to Salem Sound, and from the channel buoys, you have an entire playground: reefs, rocks, shoals, islands, and tidal rips. And the added advantage is the area attracts inshore cod around this time of year.

Though I wouldn't recommend Manchester/Salem Sound as a fishing area for anyone in a short open kayak, given the exposure and distances you have to paddle, this is one fertile North Shore, Massachusetts fishing ground.

Once my broken collarbone heals, I'll post a show-and-go get together up there.
