I am curious as to if any offshore fishermen here think trying some wrecks say 20+ miles off for cod, pollack, ect is worth it anymore off LI. I have done so a few times in recent years, and caught only the occasional cod (lots of big ling though, I'll take them too).I know it's probably not worth all the time, money, and effort , given the current sorry state of groundfish populations off NY, but I'm ever he optomist.Any opinions? Be safe!!

I don't fish to the west so I can't comment on the possibility of catching cod on deepwater wrecks back there. Off Montauk an occasional summer cod off a deep wreck is a definate possibility. But those ling are probaby not ling but silver hake which is a close relative of the ling AKA red hake.

Bacala,

The State Record Pollack (or Pollock -same fish) was caught while sharking over the Virginia Wreck in the middle of summer. It took a whole mack or squid fished deep intended for a big tiger or dusky.

Every year, we often save a bad shark trip by hitting a wreck on the way home for Cod, Seabass, etc... The Cod are there, just not as plentiful as they once were. Swing off of one of those wrecks and the DOGFISH are there too.

Is it worth it to target summer Wrecks for bottom fish? Well chances of putting a catch together are near none these days. Once and a while you will get a pocket of fish at the Virgina or the Tower Area. But the waters west of Moriches have been dead for years. Like the doctor said you may get lucky but the fishing is min. Actualy the spring till june was always a great cod time. The last catch of cod I put together in the west wrck area was like in 95 had 47 cod to 54 Lbs. i have tried last year some wrecks and had a few fish but most of the trips invovlved a long run like 80+ miles. My advice unless you hear a bite off of coxies ledge or around that area don't burn the fuel!
Hey you could always go up to hyanis the fishing is better there!

Thanks for the input gents ! I see everyone so far has basically the same opinion as me-its really not worth it anymore, at least off the West End.I have done well on a few charters at Cox's, usually in July or August (last time the blue doggies were a real pain though). Tog, you're definately correct, up North is the best bet these days. I like the Yankee Fleet in Gloucster(spell?), as well as Helen H. Better off burning fuel in the truck! Again, thanks for the opinions. Any more?
