Over the weekend I was scrubbing my deck and waxing it when I notice a black color that looks to be stained under the fiberglass. It is covering most of the rails around the whole boat. I took some on/off spray to it and try to scrub it away but its still there.

Any clue what it can be? I was thinking when I sanded my bottom maybe the ashes of the bottom paint were traveling up and got stuck to my deck and rails. Or is it because I am just scrubbing to hard and I wore off the white finish. The boat is only 4 years old.

Thanks guys.

Paul,

It is mostly on the gunwale and around the rail beams. I took another look at it tonight and some of the dark coloring is gone but most is still there. I wonder if the wax compound job that I did brought back some of the finish.

Can scrubbing the fiberglass to hard start to pit the decks grip groves?

Thanks

What boat? What was it built from?
Too much scrubbing with abrasives can take a layer of gel coat off, and if it's thin the resin(epoxy, polyester, vinylester) can show thru. What color was this darkness?

Very difficult to diagnose without seeing it. Does the fiberglass shine (without wax) where it is discolored? Did you really compound it to try and remove the color or did ou just use a cleaner wax? Try washing it with acetone and if that doesn't remove the color then try using some foberglass stain remover, or some "on and off" made by Marykate. Ne careful with the "on and off" and/or acetone follow the directions and don't breathe the fumes.

Its a 19' Trophy CC. The darkness color is a grey coloring.

Mike-

The fiberglass usually shines after a good cleaning and a wax job. I cleaned the boat with soap and some spray away then used woodys wax for the wax job. After I washed the wax residue away in some small areas I used acetone to see if that would remove the grey coloring and it didnt. Maybe some "on/off" will do the trick. Later tonight I will be working on my raw water/livewell pump and I will try and take some pictures to show.

Can it be that after sanding the bottom that the dust got stuck to the gunwale and soaked into the fiberglass?

Thanks guys!

I doubt it. Try the "On and off" and the FSR (fiberglass stain remover) and let us know what happens.

After sanding my bottom I unwrapped the boat to find what sounds to be what you are describing. In my case it was dust particles from sanding that seemed to get into the pores of the gelcoat. Soap and cleaner wax would not get it off, so I compounded the entire hull and everything came out.

That was my case anyway.

Mike-

Ill try the on/off tonight and let you know what happens.

Thanks!

BoniB-

WOW so you have the same problem. What kind of compound did you use? Maybe ill try that incase the on/off or fiberglass stain remover doesn't work.

Thank you.

Are you the first owner? Is it possible that the previouse owner had put barrier coat on it? Barreier coat is grey...well, it was till recently, they introduced white.

Try a small [atch with Mr Clean's Magic Erasure. If it get's bigger it's under paint/tie coat, if it get's smaller, it can be carbon build up from air pollution. :)

Thanks for your help guys. I used On/off gel scrub and it actually took the discoloring away. My gunwales are back to being white again. Now I guess that I will have to re-wax my boat because that is some strong stuff.

BoniB- Give on/off a try. If you are having the same problem as me that should do the trick.

Thanks again for the help!

Good Luck!

Glad we finally figured it out! Yes you will have to re-wax, the on and off will strip all the wax.
