I want to purchase a decent ocean fluking rod ($100-$200) for my father. He fishes outside of Moriches in 65 to 70 feet of water with anywhere between 4 and 8 ounces of lead. Any suggestions.

Hi,

In that price range you will find very nice rods.

Before you go to your local shops, take a piece of 15# or so mono and tie a loop in each end. Attach a 6 or 8 oz sinker on one end. When you are checking out a rod attach the other end of the mono to the tip of the rod. Now you can bounce the sinker to get the feel of the rod.

Diawa Eliminator (inexpensive) and Sealine rods, Lamiglas BL 7020C, Seeker rods, St Croix and Shakespeares. Many nice rods to choose from.

Have fun looking for your Father's new rod.

Captain Neil,
My father does use seeker rods as he prefers the action, what seeker rod would be good for ocean fluking. I saw posts talking about a 685, however, I do not know what a 685 means and could not find info on that rod on seeker.com.
Thanks for the help,

Hi,

Seeker Inshore Series, BCBW 658-6 1/2', rated 15-25 with 20# test line sweet spot. This blank is one of my best sellers and has taken a 100 # mako, by accident. Good for wreck and reef fishing.

Seeker Black Steel series, G-196-7', 12-20 # test mono.
Try to find these in a tackle shop and pull on to see if they dit your needs.

Happy Hunting.

Hi,

I do not own either reel. If I was to buy one today I think i would take the Calcutta 400. I realize you can get a Penn fixed faster and earier but the Penn reel is to heavy for me.

Being older, I like to use reels that are not heavy so I use Newells and Abu Garcia. I like the Newell 220 with 3.6 to 1 retrieve ratio (slower but more powerful).

I use these Abu Garcia reels in the ocean; 6500 TCST,6500 CL(BIG GAME Collection), and 5600 C4 Winch (3.8 to1 ratio). I get all these reels at J&H in Oakdale if you can not find them where you shop.

Hey Capt. Neil - have you seen the BCBW589?

5'9" of nasty, that's for sure.

I picked up a factory-wrapped piece from the Causeway booth at Freeport - they were marked way down and it was a very worthwhile buy.

I added 3" of cork extension to the butt and now at 6' overall, its a real sweet piece.

Looks like a clam-chummer "Supremo" for this comming season.

Hi,

Are you talking about BCBW 598?

That looks like a 9" short version of BCBW 658 or very close to it.

I use the blank CBW 658 as "The Reef Rod". My customers like the tip action on it and it does have lift/turning power.

Just got blank shipment from Merrick. I ordered blanks I haven't used before just to see what they are like.

I think I hit a winner with a Lamiglas CGX 84 MH. Have been looking for a replacement for Fenwick Musky blanks that guys like to black fish with. The St Croix model is still back ordered.

Tried a couple Calstars. Great blanks but not what my customers would want. They are 270-8 and 670-8. Guess I will take them to LFFM for sale.

The Seeker CLB 706 and CBW 709 are interesting. Still deciding whether or not to stock them or sell them also.

Gfc 84 MH and GFC 84 M are nice but once again might not fit my customers needs.

I will bring then to LFFM in case anyone wants to flex them.

Good fortune with your new rod.
