Who's fishing in NYC? I am, and I know a few others are... stand up and be counted!

Just trying to find out who's fishing in NYC and where.

I fish Stuyvesant Cove, which runs from about E14th St. to E20th St. along the East River. It's been slow, but it should pick up soon. Anyone else?

good idea jtzannes, maybe we can set up a noreast fishing trip to that pier on the west side, or at least get some company for those long cold eeling nights in stuyvesant cove. would love to meet some more people who dont ask "can you eat 'em" when they hear you fish in manhattan.

I would fish NYC more if I knew where I was going. Right now, I fish Staten Island, and Breezy Point (1xthis season) I live near the Whitestone Bridge but wouldn't know where or how to fish under it!! I see guys fishing along the FDR but I hear they get bitched out by walkers and joggers

Nice fish DaShark!!!
I've been doing this in NYC for a few seasons and I've never caught one of those-been right next guys that caught 'em, but all mine are little :{

SteveC-who cares if you get bitched out by joggers? I never had any trouble from them, rather, the lucky ones that get to watch you bring in a fish get quite excited about it. Just be careful when you cast and don't leave your gear all sprawled out across the jogging path and nobody will mind. I've never fished the Whitestone, maybe Fatties can help you out.

I'm heading to Battery Park for some AM tomorrow morning - anyone interested in joining look for me - I'll have a big surf rod with an Emblem X and a 7' ugly tiger with a shimano stradic. Also wearing a blue CCA hat w/ a striper on it. I'll be there at 6:30 - anybody else?

NYCMAN-post us some pics!

NYC FISH CREW reprazent.

I will be fishing the L.I.C. pier tomorrow AM. I have seen bluefish hitting bait recently down there, not to mention the swarm of boats drifting off of the UN building just south of Roosevelt Island across the way. Way more than I have ever seen before. I live in Queens, not enuff time to drive out to the beach this weekend, so East River it is whether I like it or not.

I've pulled a few over the rail at the fishing pier down there, but the crazy Russians/Poles/Bulgarians outfish me every time.

the lines that every NYC fisherman hears:

"what kind of fish do you catch here?", "do you eat them?", "can I have that one?", and, of course, "do you want to buy some drugs?"

best NYC bait

SteveC, dont worry about the joggers they really dont care, in fact you will want to tell them off after the 3rd one asks "you dont eat them, do you? arent they poisonous"
Kevin W, forget about plugs. i tried em and others have too. we use clam and bunker chunks mainly. now that its october eels are gonna be my bait of choice. if you are one of those die hard lure guys you only have 2 options: those 4" black and white shads (you can get fancy like those storm shads everyones hot onm now) or Bait Tails, those big ugly leadhead tube lures. i personally have only caught stripers on bait or the 4" black/pearl shads on 1/2 oz jigheads.
ggood luck, hope to see y'all

Westside NYC resident. Have fished a charter along the East River with lures only and had a great time with blues and stripers. Thinking about fishing Randall's Island. Looks like a great spot. Anybody on the board fish there? Still haven't fished the Westside Pier anybody out their had any luck. I hate just feeding fish to catch them, anybody out their with me. If anybody out their is using lures let us know. Good fishing to all

Steve..

take your rod to work. Go down to the river in LIC by the old Pepsi Co factory - just south of the "water's edge" restaraunt. Due west of the Citibank building, where there are a couple of new high-end apartment buildings (about 47th, 48th ave?). There is a beautiful park down there, where the old ferry station was. There is a fishing pier, complete with a fish cleaning station.
Don't tell everyone. ;) See ya there.

Here's the main reason plugs dont work on the west side of, the Hudson, as told to me by a knowlegable fellow named Charles: "Part of the problem is the clarity of water. The Hudson is a silt bottom
river (with heavy currents). Mud. The senses fish use are hearing, smell, vibration, and last...site. The smell of a bait goes a long way. It brings the fish to you. Throwing your lures out there...they have no way of seeing it unless you hit them in the head. not very likely."

Anyone have any luck chunking?

As I think I posted here before my first trip to the "new" westside 70th st Pier I caught 4 fish, 2 in the first few minutes, lots of manmade structure in and around that area, piers, pilings, etc.

i have been fishing the east river since 1988, and I do fantastic. I never use bait and rarely get skunked. it is a real challenge figuring what the fish are going to attack from one day to the next. I have to be very secretive about my fishing spot and tactics because guys will be fishing there shoulder to shoulder keeping shorts and all. saturday 14 lb 37 inch bass and back 12 hours later for 2 more hefty bass and some nice bluefish. I hate keeping it a secret cause the experience is awsome and its tough to do it alone but thats the way it has to be. I say driving out to montauk is unecessary the west end of the island is just as nuts if not better.
