As Ralph Rodwinder correctly stated, they are smaller dragger type boats that pull crab dredges in and around NY Harbor during the winter months. The crabs are in the mud during the winter months, and these commercial boats work on the flats and along the edges of the channel catching blue claw crabs.
Many people do not realize how many blue claw crabs there are north of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, but the grounds in the Upper Harbor right up to Morris Canal New Jersey are extremely productive, catching some of the biggest blue crabs that you will ever see in this area.
