Hey guys, Im new to the site. Ive been a long time fisherman. All of my saltwater fishing has been from shore or party boats. I have and use a 16' canoe for freshwater. Its riged and reg since i use a trolling motor. The only water i have been in with it is rockland lake. I live less than 5 min from orchard beach/city island. Outside of getting a trolling motor for the saltwater how well do you think my setup will fare? I also have an outrigger setup that alows me to stand and it will not tip. Im thinking that for fishing the inlets and bays i should be ok.

Bays, harbors and coves you shouldn't have any problems. As mentioned above City Island/ Orchard Beach area has lot's of protected water. Just keep an eye on wind direction as any of these areas can get sloppy and nasty real fast. Stay away from inlets.

2 more things

Also remember: 1) to keep an eye tide and wind (especially during a full moon tide) I used to using my small fresh water boat (Coleman Crawdad with an electric engine) in the way back bays if the tide was stong and I was against it there were times I almost couldnt make headway but a canoe probably cuts through the water better then my tiny dingy. 2) Wash off the electric engine very well after each use to prevent corrision. 3) Carry all Coast Guard Approved/ required equipment (it's required) and always wear your life jacket.

boat registration

Oh yea, and remember, once you put a motor on that canoe, you have to register it with the DMV.

Thanks for the input guys. Yes it regesered with the numbers and up to date. Just ordered a Minnkota riptide TM because i dont want to ruin my freshwater one.40lbs of thrust over the 20 i have should be good. Also equiped is a Humminbird 565, down east rod holders etc. The best part about my setup is the out riggers i use. Check them out at canoeoutriggers.com My canoe is like a catamaran, heck i can dive off the side and climb back in

Welcome CanoeCrew

I like the screen name! I'm partial to canoes and there has always been something special about them with me. Just think its a great craft.
I own an old scow of a canoe that is pushing 25 years old. I bought it about 8 years ago and love the **** thing. Its a Mad River Explorer and solid as a rock!

I'd like to see how yours is set up .Any pics?

Paddleon, I should have the new TM by tuesday. If all looks good ill have it in the water next wekend weather permiting, camera at the ready. At first i was looking into a yak but haveing friends and a son who loves to fish not to mention space liveing in the bronx, i went with a canoe. Just like a yak you can go anywhere with them. The bonus is that you can realy load them down and still have a shallow draft. If i ever get rid of the one i have now i would get and Old town predator square back.
