I'm sure bass are gobbling up the porgies but I heard something a bit disturbing. The guys over at that marine store in St. James, told me of several dead bass floating in the sound. The schoolie sized fish all had porgies lodged in their throats, dorsals erect. Nature is pretty cool. If you choose to live line porgies, it would probably pay to trim the dorsal. On a side note these guys also told me of a 52lb.er taken off of cranes neck a few weeks ago. Take it for what its worth.

Live Line Porgies

Never tried it, however, it is a major way of fishing by boat up in Martha's Vinyard. I know they call bunker up there pogies, but back in July while fishing along the beach in Edgartown, I saw the whole charter fleet picking Scup to use as bait off in the rips around the Island. They came back in the afternoon with limits of fish up to 38lbs. Fished them on circle hooks, leader material to a swivel, egg sinker on the main. Food for thought when bunker are not around.

Anything that wiggles is better than dead meat.

Baitfish exhibit a fear in the presence of a predator that makes them irresistable.

I would tell you some of the oddball species I have caught bass with, but it might be misconstrued as "touting" a particular bait, when that simply is not true. Can you say "opportunistic feeder"?

I've found immature/baby sea robins in thier bellies from time to time. Nothing big - maybe a couple of inches.
