I am staying with a friend who has a house on the north fork, across from shelter island. I can't resist bringing a rod and tackle bag. Some questions: Is it legal? I know winter flounder is a month or more away and stripers another month after that, but there are lots of fish that have no season, right? Assuming its all legal, what's out there, and what tackle would you choose? My initial ideas are to grab my 7ft light spinning rod and a smattering of rubber shads, grubs, and tins. Just to be on the safe side, I'll crunch the barbs down. Anything other ideas, or am I just crazy to be thinking of fishing in February?

Water is too cold for artificials. Bait might land you some schoolie stripers, flounder. For a shot at some legal fish perhaps give blackfish a try. I don't think they have come in close to shore this early but you never know.
