Just a casual observation:

I went with the family to Atlantique F.I. on Sat. afternoon by boat.
On the hottest day of the year so far, the basin was maybe 60% full. Now I can understand not wanting to pay the $31 for a " C" slip ( then $ go up from there) but I was one of only about 4 boats anchored on the west side. Normally there's 25 -50 boats anchored. Yes its still early for the beach and the water was COLD
, but it was BEAUTIFUL
there.
Later on, my older son asked for ride to Ocean beach. I dropped him off around 7 and decided to use the opportunity to do a little fishing before he needed to be picked up around 10. I saw a grand total of 4 private boats fishing around the bridge-- 4!

Between gas prices and and ugly brown bay I feel this is gonna be one ugly summer for those involved in the fishing/ boating industry in the GSB area.

I think your right and now only for GSB, I think the price of fuel is going to keep a lot of people off the water, everywhere.

I was down at the boatyard both days this weekend. Bloody-A hot and 90% of the boats were still in their slips (although I did see a gas-sucking cigarette boat go out each day:rolleyes: )

there must be fifty boats in the yard, four of which remain shrink-wrapped. of the fifty, perhaps five were being worked on.

I don?t know much about the GSB, but around here the boats were out in full force this weekend.

I went out fishing by Crane?s Neck Friday evening and there was a decent amount of boats out. Not many after dark, but that is normal.

On Saturday it looked like everyone who had a boat was using it. The marina parking lot was crowded, and both ramp locations were a zoo
. (I am glad I didn?t have to deal with that ;) ) I was out from about 10:00AM to 4:00PM and there were plenty of boats outside of Port Jefferson and inside of Smithtown Bay. Not as many as I have seen in previous years, but there were a lot out there.

I wanted to go out yesterday evening but the storms kept me from doing so. I did go down to do some surf fishing with my dog in the late afternoon. The trailer lot was almost full and lots of boats from the marina were out.

When the boomers started moving in the armada came screaming in
. I was down by West Meadow Beach and the sight of all the boats high tailing it in was funny. I then went down to Porpoise Channel and there were several people trying to splash their boats as the majority of them were trying to pull theirs out.

At the ramps there were four boats lined up trying to go out, and about 20 lined up trying to get in. With only two ramps it was interesting to say the least.

Not just boating?

I have to drop my kids off in Babylon by 5 - 7 pm on Sunday's and I drive in from PA. I dread the summer months because of all the beach traffic that I have to deal with on the SS and NS parkways.

Yesterday when I dropped them off there was no beach traffic whatsoever heading back into Queens from the Island. I understand that the kids in NY aren't out of school yet, but it was up in the 90's on both Saturday and Sunday. Figured some people would have gone to Jones Beach.

Gas prices are killing everyone.

I used to spend a lot of time on Jones beach when I was in college, and fought the traffic all the time. When I kept the boat in Montauk I would still have to fight the traffic if I left Montauk after about 2 on Sunday Afternoon.

Heat Wave Boating

Coming back from Gateway Marina on the Belt, I could see to Breezy Point the bay was full ... of SAILBOATS !
Kind of like the Bronx River Parkway only being open to bicycles on Sunday.
(There were powerboats out though, just a little exaggeration.)

I have been taking (car) trips to the gas station for filling up on Saturday night when it was cool. Emptied my tanks to clean so I had a lot of gas to buy. Hauling 20 gallons at a time to the boatyard is time consuming! Putting it all through a filter funnel too.

Credit card company called me a couple of times to ask me what's going on.
Sunoco pumps shut you down at $75.oo unless you see the main in the booth.

Should launch on the 21st.
