Hi,

I did a lot of surf fishing and this time of the year I did best there when there was a high tide around 4pm at sunken meadow. Park near the flag pole and walk along the boardwalk west till the end, hit the beach and keep walking till around 1/4 mile west of the jetti.

Use a med action spinning rod with 15-20lb test. My fav lures were a 007 or 017 diamond jig with a white tube till the sun set then the slow sinking bagleys finger mullet or a 5-1/4" rebell, black, gold or a white and red bomber. Never tried the new yozuries but they look good.

Let me know how you did. Don't forget you will need a night fishing permit after dark or they will ticket your car.

Hi,

I wouldn't go and respool from 12-15 unless it is old line since your not getting much as far as strength. When I fished there I had a 7' ugly stick and a penn 450ss reel. This was considered a little undersized by some but the chances of a 50lb cow are slim also (unless bunker schools are swiming by). You may want to consider bringing both rods and a sand spike, This way you can get the feel for what is best and use it. The 9' sounds like a good setup to start with. The key is you will not be casting heavy lures so what ever casts the lighest lure the furthest is probably the best.

As for the rig, a 2' length of 25-30lb mono leader attached to the main line by a barrel swilvel and at the other end, a plain snap for your lures is all you need. Some will put a teaser ahead of the plug like a red gill or feather since there may be schools of sandeels in the water.

If things are slow, consider tossing a bucktail for fluke. I have caught my share by accident on rebels early in the year up there at high tide.

Also if you bring the sand spike, I would toss a blackfish bait (sandworm) out there. Some big ones come in to the area in the early spring and are caught from shore. The further west you go the more rocks you will find underwater. I would start where the high bluff begins.

Good luck

Ps don't bother if the wind is strong from the north. the water turns to coffee. also I caught most of the fluke on the rebel at low water (makes sense. Never targeted them with a bucktail but should work at high.
