Nissequogue River
Has anyone been fishing the Nissequogue lately? I was out there a week ago to see what was happening with the dredging, and it was still going on, though, to my surprise, the water did not appear dirty. But I'm still curious: Is it a waste of time to fish here with with the dredging going on? If so I thought I might try Calahan's Beach or Long Beach. I have also heard of a beach called Little Africa, but have no idea where it is. Anyone have any suggestions or reports for shore fishing in this area?

Bassomatic, you can check the Reports section as to fishing results at the Nissequoque, but as far as fishing the Long Beach (Little Africa) area, be warned that unless you have a resident sticker, for the Village of Nissequoque, as soon as you leave your car to fish, a village cop will find you and ticket you. They are very strict in this village with private police. I was ticketed before Memorial Day when I parked at Callahan's Beach without a Smithtown town permit. The ticket was $25 which, when not paid, increased to $40! (certainly not worth the fishing at Callahan's!) To fish at the Nissequoque River, you will need a town permit to park in the Kings Park bluff lot but without a permit, you can park on the road above the lot without a problem.
Forget about parking anywhere on Old Dock Road near the bluff at the mouth of the Nissequogue river. The owner of the Old Dock Inn restaurant is on a war path. He is trying to get rid of all out-of-towners who use the bluff. His efforts include a petition to move the canoe rental companies out of there. The town of Smithtown has already changed all of the NO PARKING signs on Old Dock Road to something like "No parking from 9pm to 6am". They write tickets all of the time.
As far as Little Africa, it is a Town of Smithtown permit that you will also need. The night fishing permit is free at town hall to all residents. Outsiders will also be ticketed.
Your best bet in the whole area is Makamah Beach in Northport. It's a Huntington beach that is hardly ever patrolled and thr fishing is great there.

Thanks for the info about Makamah. I grew up in Northport and knew this beach very well as a kid...I'll give it a try.
I just returned from the river and there was no dredging and plenty of anglers.

Just as a further little note about Makamah Beach, I'm not sure what they do off season but in season, at dusk, a town safety car comes to the beach to lower the access gate.He usually flashes his lights to alert you that he is about to do so so that you don't get locked in. It might be a good idea to check with the locals about the current fall policy before you leave your car in the lot at darkness.
