In todays Newsday 2/23/03 ther is an article in the sports section writen by Tom Rock. He has all the inforamtion on the 2 bass a day proposal that we have chated about here.

Here's a link to the article

I can not guote the atricle but it seems that there is a push for public input.

Also how the regs for scup and fluke are going to be changed.
I have seen these items mentioned on the boards and there is even mention of "other fishing venues" was mentioned.

A famous radio talk show host used to end his show with this statement:

"Your influence counts...use it!'

So, this is what our asking for a increase in the striped bass limit mail letter campaign resulted in:

"Young said earlier this week that he received 15 letters and several e-mails, many of them supporting the two-fish idea".

We will keep you posted on how this progresses till the opening day of the striped bass season.

the key to it all!!!!!!!!

Well guys here is the quote that says it all you need to respond
quote:
Amendment Six to the Atlantic striped bass management plan, approved in November, allows states to go as high as two fish per angler. So did Amendment Five, actually, which has shaped regulations since 1995. But when the DEC sought public opinion on whether recreational fishermen should be allowed to keep one fish or two then, the message was clear.

"The people we heard from were pretty much united against that option [of two fish]," Young said. "There may have been more who were for it, but they were not vocal."

B. Youngs responce.

I would hope to think that this 15 letter report was early in the week when the first post went up. I am sure Tom Rock has a deadline to meet for publication.

Or maybe he saw it here!!

Hopefully there will be more of a responce.

Im sorry for this but gentelmen Im highly aginst this topic. Yes the bass population has risen back up ,but do we want it to go back down.We also need another 5-10 years untill we can see many 40-50 pounders. I just dont like the idea. What about the morons that have no clue of conservation and keep 2 bass per angler now that maybe its going to be 2 there keep 3 or 4!!! I feel one 20 pound bass is good enough meat for a week (feeding a family of 4).Do we really need 40-50 pounds of meet sitting in are frezers half getting frezer burned . Its also not like any of you are not going back out the next day or atleast that week!!! Im just saying I know when I get a 20-30 pound fish I just dont need another one!! How much meat do we really need!!!

I am going to see if we can get a poll up to determine what our users prefer. I can tell you I?ve tested this in the past and it has overwhelmingly been favored to keep it a 1 fish per angler.

I?m going to stay in the back round on this one until the poll is compete, but I will check in on my position then. Some of you know my position and he hasn't changed.

I think we'll also do a poll to get feedback on how people feel about an earlier opening.

Hi all,

It's a good thing stripers can't read. I think they would be laughing at all us recreational fishermen and women.

Folks, regardless to your opinion, send in a letter voicing your opinion. If you DON'T you have no right to COMPLAIN after the fact!

I suspect a 1 striper a day will win out again. The folks that want that voice their opinion strongly and get heard.

Stripers have a strong hold on many fisherman. I can remember my Father always supporting Save Our Stripers many years ago. And he didn't have time to go fishing for them!

Conservation does work! I do not know if you will ever see an over abundance stripers over 50 lbs. I feel too many natural things prevent this.

My personal preference is that every striper over 40 lbs HAS be released! Bring a camera and a tape measure. Take pictures, take measurements and have a computer generated fish manufactured to hang on the world.

I would not object to a smaller sized fish being kept. Many like to eat the smaller ones.

Poll

Hello George,

I see this has your interest also, GOOD.

I think everyones interpitation of this letter is different. Weather you are for it or against it is up to the individual him/her self.

The point being is that the door is open for us to have a choice or make a statement to the DEC.

A poll may be ok for what it is but would it be a majority poll.

Your interest in this is comendable but I personally think it is up to each person to make there choice.

I truely hope that people excersise there choice and send in a letter through the mail. E-mails are to easly deleted and petitions with a lot of signatures are to generic.

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Young to ask us our opinion which means that they (DEC) realize we are out there. I can't remember they asked us anything. If anyone can let us know.

I may not agree with 186Logic but at least he sent in the letter.

I hope everyone that reads this and the other threads will do it.

And for those who do not please don't complain when it goes against your choice.:(

Hopefully they will have to use a hand truck to bring in the mailbag.:)

Regards,

2 bass limit

I THINK IT WILL STAY ONE FISH PER DAY. OR IT WILL HAVE A BIG EFFECT ON ALL CHARTER BOAT AROUND NEW YORK STATE.
IF THEY INCREASE REC: TO TWO FISH ARE THEY GOING TO RAISE THE AMOUNT TO 4 BASS
PER DAY PER PERSON TO CHARTER BOATS.
I DON;T BELIEVE THEY ARE GOING TO UP THE FISH LIMIT JUST BECAUSE THE BASS ARE FINALLY COMING BACK SO STRONG.

jstfish,

Why would they raise the limit for the charter/party boats? They have had the limit that the regs supported all along. The private recs requested to have their limit reduced. Now, it may be requested to be returned to what was offered in the past. Nothing is owed to the charter/party boats because of that.

I Agree

Have to go along with D/B on this one.

I had the same responce when told this by a Orient Capt but his statement was 3 per angler for a charter. His reason was a first I think a knee jerk reaction.

And in fairness he also came up with the tagging idea. Which was great but a different topic.

He stated that why would anyone charter a private boat if they can't catch more then the rec. guy with a private boat.

Is that the whole idea of this is who going to get more fish? The rec or the charter Capt.

The C/C can keep 2 per angler and the secret is not how many you keep. Some of these guys can fill a boat in an hour.
So what do you do with the rest of the trip? Go for something else once the quato is filled, right? If you have a good capt he will do that.

The idea here is not how many but your voices to be heard by the REC to the DEC.
You can argue all you want latter on who gets what and how many.

2 bass limit

Both of you are right. I'am not just on the charter/party side. With the prices that every body pays for there boats and the limited amount of time we all get to fish. The amount of time the boats are out of the water (winter).
There would be alot more fish storys to share with the discussion board. I have no problem with every body having equal shares 2 rec. 2 charter/party boat per person.

just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

i sent my letter asking for 1 fish.

we should set an example. the article says something good. that we fishermen can be ecologically responsible, and we want to keep the stocks high. i cant see any way that keeping more bass would be good for bass stocks.
now a slot limit is something else. my letter also asked that they look into other states' slot programs for fish like drum, and see if that could help increase the average size of the bass here.

the only way to be heard (for or against) is to speak up, so write in and voice your opinion.

Please clarify....

Isn't the issue here whether the recs get the fish or we do?
I mean if keeping it at one fish means that many more Bass swim free then fine ....one fish it is.
BUT....if keeping the rec limit at one fish means the commercials get that much more then I have to ask those who are against 2 fish.......What are you thinking?
