I just put a reserve on a new P229 as soon as the tackle shop gets them in it's mine. I've read the A-Z article, and tons of other Newell threads, just wondering how the P series is going to differ from the reels previously discussed from a maintenance/modification standpoint? Also, should I get smoothies for it, and should I change the gears down to 3.6:1 (if so, do I need a special gear set for the P)? Thnx

I spoke directly to Carl Newell about both these issues.

**** of a nice guy, BTW - he said that the gear sets are the same as the "S" series and will be using the 3-washer drag sets, again, like the "S" reels.

Before you switch out the drag washers - give the stock Newell pieces a try - they have very recently changed the composition to something very similar to Penn's HT100 material - I've upgraded a few of my older reels with this stuff (Carl sent me 4 sets of washers at N/C - because I'm just that kind of guy) and they seem real nice and smooth to me.

We'll see over the long run.

Can you spare a set of them washers?

Hey Lep!
Have you been on vacation?
Your absence has not gone unnoticed!

Would you like to put a set of them washers in my 229?

Glad you're back, we all missed our
Lucky Charms and Krispy Kremes.......
Hope all is well!

Sure - why the heck not?

I've been here all along, just didn't see that I could add much to any of the discussions.

Didn't see much on desert cakes, pasta dishes or shellfish recipes. ;)

And I'm tired of advocating high-speed reels for blackfishing. Didn't convince too many anyway, apparently.

Bring that reel over anytime and I'll do the job for ya. Call me first though.

With this freakin' snow every 15 minutes, I can't get much done on the boat anyway. I hate pulling props and inboard shafts in a foot of snow.

I ain't half the woman I used to be.
