The drag on the 400 series am pretty sure is similar to drag on 300 series. Years ago I had 1 newell 447 converted to the 540 where I can get around 18-20 lbs of drag with new carbontex washers.Personally wouldnt fish more then 40 1b on it.Might get 13 lbs of drag. Newell no longer does the conversion.Perhaps you can exchange it for 500 series much better drag. Good Luck Mitch

Bite Me.....when I get a moment, I will talk about these reels, but mastein just gave you one of the little secrets that Newell used to do at the factory a few years back which was converting 400 series reels into 500 series reels so that you now had a 4/0 sized gearing and drag system in the same line capacity reel.

I will get back to this latter on today when I have a few moments.

I love Newell reels. Having said that I never understood the 400 series reels. They have huge line capacity and are rated for some heavy mono yet the "guts" don't match the exterior. The 500 series is an altogether different beast. The 400 series reels aren't much different than the 300 series/jigmaster type reels.

Just a humble opinion from a Newell fan.
