Newell 338F

I am not an expert on Newells, however I do have quite a few. One which is the Newell 344FJ. The reel spec mirror the 338-5 338-3.6. The only difference is the upgraded appearance. They were both availble in these ratios and the line capacity is the same: 25lb-470 yds., 30/380, 40/300. I have taken both apart and notice no real differences. I believe the all black body was replaced by the stronger metal frame side plates. All in all there both great. If you can pick up the F line I would just because a believe it to someday be a collectable. Good luck shopping. My 344FJ in not for sale!

Hi Crazy AL....the 338F was like skatemaster mentioned, a jigmaster sized reel (380 yds of 30lb test) with 5 to 1 gears that take a regular washer on the main gear (4 fiber washers total) and internals similar to the P series, with no c-clips on the yoke posts. The stainless on the rings was the best used in a newell reel, the plates being a brittle plastic material, cracked very easily. They have some value, in the 322 and 332 size, but now are best left as collectors items, due to the scarcity of finding plates to replaced the cracked ones you ALWAYS get on these reels....prices have gone as high as 250 dollars for these reels, but i have purchased a few at shows for around 40-60 dollars over the years, due to their poor condition. I did like the knobs on the handles of these reels, but other then the aluminum spools, i would pass on buying a blackie for any serious money...the aluminum bars and bases, over the years getting 'welded' to the stainless loctited screws, and are almost impossible to remove, if you have to replace these parts.

J has a stainless top bar in the reel. Makes it a little stronger on the wider spool 300 series reels. The "J" stands for jig, as in, that is what you are throwing. The non-j, topless model is made for fishing live bait, which allows you to leave the reel in freespool and move the spool with your hand to take up slack and give line, without banging your knuckles into the top bar. California tactics.

EC Newell Man and gang... Thanks for the heads up! Fortunately the one I have still in pretty good (no cracks) and in working condition. I think I will baby this one and continue to abuse the other Newells. :)

Hello Reelfly... I am getting ready and can't wait for those Fla. Snooks!!! BTW: Where did you get the Fla. report?;)
