I have just gotten back into fishing and being that I don't own a boat, surfcasting seems my option but I was wondering if someone could point out a link on how the tides work because being that my time to fish is limited (sundays and holidays) I'd really like to get the advantage as far as time is concerned.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. slack tide is the approximate 20min. period at high or low tide when the current stops and then changes. as for the best tide it is always changing at every spot all the time. put your time in at one apot and you will soon learn which tides are best under certain conditions.

If you truly dont have enough time to get out I wouldnt worry about the tides all that much. I would Find a local spot that you can get to fast and easy and fish it as much as you can. After a few trips you will see were and when fish are around and active. If you only fished high or incoming or only plan to go when you think the tide is good, you will miss out on a lot of great fishing.

High: water at highest level
flood: incoming current strongest
slack: water not moving, turning from in to out and vice versa
Low: water at lowest level
Ebb: outgoing current at max..

slack can vary, FI inlet for example takes close to 3 hrs to slack after tides..

If you're a newbie(as I still am), don't worry so much about the tides. Fish when you can.

Keep a notebook with a tide chart. Write down all weather observations. When you catch something, write it down. Include the bait/lure used, method, water condition, temperature, time(so you can reference tide), bait in water, etc.

You will eventually learn the best times by experiencing it. I've found some places are better at low than high....Perhaps it's just luck at times, but the pattern has been pretty steady.

The best way to learn it is to do it.

Noobies catch fish...

My cousins FIRST DAY Striper fishing this week.
(low tide/middle of the day as well)

i'll second zeno's book, as will probably anyone else who has read it. i just got back into fishing myself and i learned A LOT in a short amount of time. also frank daignault's striper surf. i'm trying to get a hold of bill muller's books as i have heard from others that his books are informative as well. also check out the posts in your area under the fishing updates tab above - it'll give you an idea of who is catching what in your area.
