Ok bear with me here! Im looking to get into some Tuna action but am confused as to what kind of setup to use. I currently have an Accurate 870 single speed and a Lamiglas TFX7650 (7 foot 6 50lb class) rod laying around doing nothing. Would this be a good setup for the football class Tuna? also I beleive that the reel could handle bigger Tuna, how big is the question I ask you guys and what kind of rod could I pair with it? or is this setup no good at all?

Thank you all in advance!

I know nothing about accurates. We run 12 jb customs on our boat matched with either a 30 vsw or a 50vsw. The new thing out are the 16 vsx by penn the drags a beefed up. They say with some coaxing you can fight just about anything on them. Good luck with what ever you do.

Looking at the specs for that rod and reel combo IMHO I think it would be fine for footballs. Load it up with 300 yards mono or 400 yards spectra and the fast taper on the rod will give you some forgiveness with the lighter line. I personally wouldn't want to use it if I was into fish over 50 lbs, just my opinion, but depending on the angler skill and crews patiences it would handle the occasional larger fish within reason.

sounds ok for a jigging outfit

But N.G. for trolling. As previously stated for trolling you would need a 30-50 vsw. Especially now that they have started to pickup some Bigeyes. For jigging i would load it up with 65-80 Braid, with a 30-60 ft topshot of either 60 or 80 fluro

Thank You all for the quick replies!! Great Info! Ok so it looks like I have a decent setup for jigging and catching footballs. On to the next front... a 30 or a 50vsw paired with what rod would be good for trolling? Been reading alot of good stuff about the Calstar rods and the new Accurate Xnergy rods.

Once again thank you for your patience and info :)

Right on the money

Calstar Rods are excellent choices
. Check out John at Trophy Tackle as he has a wide selection and would reccomend the best Rod depending upon which reel you choose. For me if you plan on doing any PB tuna trips i would go with the 50 VSW myself
. Thats what i use matched with a 6' Calstar rated for 80-130 lb test.

Thanks again for the replies, Avet makes great reels I have a couple of the inshore ones the SX and the JX. As far as rods the consensus seems to be Calstar and Seeker so I guess I will be looking in that direction.

Bret- thanx for the info on the 870 I figured it could go bigger than schoolie size with the size of the reel and the twin drags.

OK now to throw a monkeywrench in the works!
Anybody got any thoughts on the Lamiglas Big Fish Series rods??:confused::confused:

I am a die hard Lamiglas fan, at least all their inshore and surf stuff. Don't know anything about their offshore line.

As always thanx guys!

Thanks to everyone for the nice words.

We carry the largest selection of Seeker offshore rods on the East Coast. We have the East Coast American Series, Black Steel and Super Seeker. All of these rods come in many variations with line class ratings and guide style. We have a large selection of Seeker rods with and with out Aftco UniButts as well.

Calstar rods are awesome value for the money. We have them from the Boomer Jr. to the popular 6455XXH. They do not have unibutts but foam grips keeping the cost and weight down. World class rods and you would not be disappointed.

If you are private boat fishing with inboards go with a 5 1/2 foot rod. Dont give away any leverage and you can apply max pressure on the fish. If you will be fishing on a boat with outboards or a party boat go with a 6' rod.

As far as reels go I make no secret that for the money Avet provides the most bang for your buck. If spectra is something you would like to fish with, an Avet 30EXW/2 with 400yds of JBH130 and a 100' topshot would be ideal. The reel has the drag of a 50 class reel and with the spectra there is no issue as to line capacity. The reels are tough as iron. This past month has seen AVET 30EXW/2 catch a 480 Thresher, 148 bigeye and a 193 mako and a blsitering run of a 250lb class blue marlin. All of these reels were either rigged by us or we supplied the Jerry Brown Hollow and BHP topshots.
If mono is your preference than a 50W would be my choice again AVET first with the Shimano LRS second.

You need to first determine your budget. Then how are you going to fish the equipment. Private boat, head boat inboards, outboards and then you can narrow your choices. Then you need to put a bend in the rod to see if you prefer a faster taper or slower more parabolic action. I prefer Seeker rods because the power comes on very fast and the rod shuts down quickly providing great recoil in the blank. When coupled with a Braid style bucket harness you can bring max pressure on the fish with minimal input on your upper body. Calstar blanks also have a fast taper but not as quick as my preference dictates. John and Diane (D&J fish) prefer the Calstars as does Mike (Bluefish 9). Sam and Mike (Clementine and Bobrusky)are all over the Seeker East Coast rods. Thats the great thing about having large inventories of rods you can bend away till you decide where you want to be. Ultimately it is your choice to make. And you have to be happy with your choice.

This was long and I hope it helps.

Thanks everyone!
