I stopped in at the new Walmart in Setauket this week to check out the sporting goods section. I was very happy to see a decent amount of useful tackle.

One interesting lure I found was the Storm Wildeye Hair Squid Jig. It's a one ounce, banana-like, lead head. covered over with that scented rubber they use, to make the fins and eye of the squid. The hook eye comes right out of the end of the lure instead of being offset. I look foward to trying these guys out this year, but at only one ounce, it won't be too good for the deep water jigging.

Riptide Crabs

I also picked up a bunch of the new rubber Riptide crabs to try this year. Four and two inches in size.

rig 'em weedless

Just use a worm hook to rig them to float, or a weighted worm hook to get them to sink.

I can already see the bass and weaks sucking these things in around the docks at night.

Not sure either...

...but someone had to be the first to try it.

I think they would be more of a southern, redfish type bait, but they may work up here. Bass will eat anything (lobster, mantis shrimp and crabs), so why not.

I'm planning on trying them during the day on the grass flats and floating them around pilings, docks and marshes at night. We'll see.

weakies with crabs

I dont know about where you guys fish but down here I have caught weaks that had bellies full of small shedder crabs just like those rubbers. I use Berkely power sand worms marinated in shedder crab oil(with just a hint of garlic) I'll bet the crabs would work even better! I'll have to check wal-mart down here.

New products

Off the tackle subject...has anyone seen or used the new wading boots put out by Korker. They have them at Campsite in Huntington Station. On the souls of the boots, there are regular treads or spikes. They simply slip into the souls and clip into place. Seems like a great and simple idea. I think retail is near $200 though. Don't quote me on that.

Just a thought from a rookie.. last year I was fluking in the N Shore (Huntington) and when a nice fish came up ~8 lbs (too bad it wasn't mine), it had a VERY recently eaten WHOLE mantis shrimp about 7-8 inches long inside the stomach.

Q: Do you know if there is a vendor who sells soft mantis shrimp lures?
Q2: The squid jigs you showed in the pics look like great potential lures for fluking? Any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing the wealth

rubber shrimps

CA, I don't know of anyone that sells mantis shrimp size baits, but you can find plenty of shrimp-like baits by Berkley, DOA and Storm is making them now too. I'm looking for the Storms in the stores but think I'll have to get them from a catalog.

I think those squids will work very well for fluke. With that hook eye, running straight out of the mantle, I am curious to see how it will work for verticle jigging. But, it seems like it will be very nice for casting and retrieving, if those fins actually give it any action.

Shark-hunter, I was thinking along the same lines. I am going to try some of that crab flavored Smelly Jelly on them when I use them.
