Looking to purchase a new rod and reel to use for kayak I own several spinning reels and was wondering if it is time to try a conventional set up. Is there any pros or cons to using this type of reel. May also use pole for boat as well

I use conventional and spinning. What you use is personal preference and the kind of fishing you or doing. I do alot of chunking and live-lining of bunker , so I use a spinning rod to snag the bunker and a conventional setup to live-line and chunk it.

Make sure you get rods with a short butt end , easier to use in the kayak. You also dont want something too long or too short, too long it is hard to get fish close to the yak, too short and you wont be able to guide a fish around the front of the yak.

Also, get reels that hold up well to the abuse they take on a yak.

Similar to rpsurf, I use both conventional and spinning. The conventional I use for chunking and live livelining, fluke fishing. I use two spinning outfits, one is a 7ft med-heavy action Shakespeare rod with a Penn 5500 spinning reel; I use this for snagging, trolling, jigging and popping (pretty much everything). I think I paid $29 for the rod at walmart, and it's great. The other spinning outfit is for back bay popping and light jigging. It's a 7ft Penn pursuit med action, with a Penn 550ssg, (soon to be replaced with a Penn Slammer 360). The ssg is crap. All rods have short butts, and I can extend them past the front of the Kayak with ease.
