I DON;T KNOW HOW TRUE THIS IS, SO DON;T START BASHING, BUT I JUST HEARD THAT IN NEW YORK STATE THIS SEASON THERE WILL BE NO POSSESION OF FLUKE ALLOWED......DID ANYBODY HEAR THE SAME THING ? WHAT ABOUT THE BLACKFISH HAVE THEY DECIDED ON A 4 FISH LIMIT, BECAUSE THIS WEBSITE STILL HAS POSSESION AT 10.

FISHING IN OTHER STATES IS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER, SORRY TO SAY.

Concidering that there is a chance that the 2009 fluke season will be shut down if we go over this year.
Do you think they will close this season early like they did this past season, or do you think we will get a full season?

I would bet we go over. If we went over last year at a 19.5 inch fish and 64% more quota. This year we are 64% less than last year and one inch larger. It doesnt look good, but I Hope to god the Party, charter, and bait shops get the full season out of it.They are gonna need it this season. This whole thing is so sad.

Get in early

I don't know about you guys, but last year we caught larger fluke in the begining of the season and then caught pretty much nothin but shorts for the rest of the season. If they close the season early again I suggest fish like mad in the begining.

fluke regs

There are pages of good info on the fisheries management forum about this subject. Looks like 2 fish and 20 1/2" as wetdreamz stated. I doubt very much if they will allow 4 fish. NY would go over quota again. There is going to be alot more pressure on Connecticut fluke this year since it's not hardly worth running to NY side for two fish. I wonder how the authorities keep the NY fluke from illegaly immigrating to CT and vise versa? Maybe they should build a wall.

Those are the regs but their not written in stone just yet. After the meeting Tuesday, NY DEC will propose those to the feds. Don't be shocked if they do shut it down before Labor Day. Plenty of this on the Fisheries Managment forum. Most likely will go to a coast wide mangament for '09 or be shut down all together. Bottom line is the biomass numbers are flawed and dated. Need to develop new strategies for bio mass evaluation but this will take some time, more time than '09 allows.

We keep shooting our seleves in the foot every year guys. We demand the longest season with the most keepers.
Would it really hurt us to keep only one or two fluke every time we went out?
Is there anyone who needs more fish so their family don't starve?
Come on, 90% of us just like to fish enjoy the action if we get a keeper that great, the other 10% are meat fisherman, they are the same ones who kept 100 flounder and garbage bags full of blues ever trip out.
If you need fish that bad go buy some, it will be cheeper.

One messed up thing to me is my dad has been fishing at a big, well know boating dock for a very long time, probly 20 years, and fishes atleast twice a week... and only twice in all those years has anyone ever written down his catch, and one of those times were for a fish magazine survey. And buy a huge coincidence it was are best fluking trip of the year, we all limited out, and had a nice 7lber

Ivan-

I plan on fishing out of Norwalk this year since we just got a new Center Consul(used actually but new to us) - we were figuring in June - when the Smithtown Bay area is hot we would run across , hopefully get out limit and then bring some bait to spend some time driting for big porgies or heading out to the Lilco dropoff or OB to chunck some stripers. Later in the season we'll probably just stay on the Ct side and do the Middle pass, Pecks ledge, 28c, 32a and Greenwich Point thing. I also want to try off Westport,Sagautuck and Sherwood Isl,****enoe as they look real "fluky" but you never hear of guys fishing for em off there. Would like to keep the cost down to $50/man x 4 guys this year with bait and gas , lauch fee so we'll keep it closer to home.

I agree with you that some people; maybe 50% fish just for the "sport" of it and to just get out on the water and enjoy the sights sounds and smells of Saltwater fishing, and if we catch a some fish, that's a BONUS!!! But have seen guys at Marinas. keeping fish to SELL. In order to pay the costs of their boats, like Dockage, Fuel, Boat payment, Insurance and don't forget equipment like Rods & Reels,(line), Lures, and other terminal tackle and boating Equipment. And seems each year I see more an more of guys doing that. Seen two brothers make several trips with "Barrels" of Bluefish, to sell at their Bodega. They had a big meat Grinder, to grind up their Bunker that they catch by the Barrel also. They just sit at their "Hot" spot and chum away all day, catching BLUES and BASS for selling with 50-60 lb test. They don't even try to remove the hooks from the fishes mouths while fishing, takes to much time, they just tie another Hook with wire leader on and back to action. Later they might retrive the wire leadered hooks!! What an operation!!!

JollyRoger190,
I agree with you, I have seen the same thing happening for a long time myself.
But my point is, we will never get out of this hole if we keep insisting on more, more and more.
I know there will never be a happy medium but let try to help everyone. For example, party boats, charter boats and skiff rentals will be hurting so why not have different regs for them. For fluke say 3 @ 19.5. Maybe it would help them keep clients and stay in business. We currently have different regs for stripe bass so why not fluke?
If we don't bite the bullet, next year at this time we all will lose out when they shut sown the season.
Its that old saying-- pay me now or pay me latter, the choice is ours.
