if you can still find a Penn Baja they are good reels, Newells are good for under $200, but out of the choices you gave I would go with the Saltist.

Although if you really want to go old school, I still use a Daiwa 50H that I've had for a VERY VERY long time on one of my rods.

avets are great reals i love mine. i also have the torium 20, its great for cod it has a higher gear ratio it is 6:1 but i like it better then my avet for cod. the torium is also a little cheeper. you can go wrong with either the torium 20 or avet lx.

200-250$ roughly. I was looking at the baja at charkbait, then I saw the avets. Just mostly curious if anyone has experienced any major problems with any of these choices, I'm kinda leaning towards one of the newer generation reels, offset gearbox, bigger drags, etc. Thanks for the input.

I'm a believer of Avet reels as I have about 20 or so, of them.. I bought the LX 6:1 for my light Tuna jigging rod and decided to cod fish with it last week when i was up in Maine. I was very unhappy with the fact that you loose free spool once you tighten up the drag to around 15lbs I think. If you not going to use the heavier drag then go for it, but if you ever want to tighten down its a pain in the azzz.. I'm looking at the saltiga, Torsa or Alutecnos for the bigger tuna and AJ's.

I prefer Daiwa to all the others. I dont have enough experience w/ Avet to draw an opinion.

Shimano is just overpriced junk IMHO!

Avet is a much better reel made in the USA..The JX would make a great cod reel.. I dont have any experience with Daiwa but they do look nice..Rod ? Lamiglas , Calstar or GUSA;);)

My torium has been sitting in the closet since I got a Saltist. Saltist holds up much better than torium and I don't have to get ridiculed by the captain ("high speed reels have no place in codfishing"). The Baja is a little heavy but it is my go to reel when fishing deep, holds plenty of 65 lb spectra which comes in handy when you start seeing the bottom of the spool.

I don't know why you guys don't like Torium 20 for cod. :)
I experimented Torium and Saltiga side by side. High gear ratio of Torium 20 didn't have cranking power of Saltiga, but for some reason, I like to use Torium 20 for cod.

Same here. I feel that Torium is idially suited for shallow water drifting on top of the bank, where you do a lot of cast-jig-reset kind of fishing, and release a lot of shorts. Faster retrieve really helps to increase your effective fishing time. For deeper water amd heavier jigs, I do prefer a Daiwa Saltist, even though Torium is a lighter and more castable reel. I also have an emotional attachment to my Torium, as I've caught a couple of personal bests with it.

Both Torium and Saltist require TLC, and will go away if you ignore them. In fact, Saltist is more vulnarable to salt water penetration than Torium, at least in my experience. On the flip side, Torium's roller bearing is more prone to corrosion, which I think it has to do with the metal used in Shimano's pressure cillinder. If you are not the type to give your reels some love every couple of months, stick with a Penn Jigmaster.

I agree with FishWisher, unfortunately, I don't get the chance to fish shallow very often in southern Maine, the line just keeps going down and out. The Torium just doesn't have the cranking power to bring up those ugly hake from the depths.

What he said!

Except i have the Torium 16 (narrower spool) but with braid, plenty of capacity even for deep fishing on the Bunny Clark trips with Tim!

Great reel - and despite what some folks think, Shimano has done something with the gearing to provide plenty of power even with the high 6.2/1 gear ratio.

BTW that gear ration is VERY HANDY when you are retreiving empty hooks in deep water.

And not too expensive $169 - 179 usual list price.

Jon - just don't hook hake! Devil fighters they are!! :) :) :)

Seriously, the Torium 16 I have has plenty of cranking power - even for a Halibut I hooked a couple of years ago as well as BIG pollock and a couple of steaker cod.

If Tim wasn't so fond of Hake I wouldn't have to worry. He is the one who gave me so much grief about the torium, good natured of course. I bought mine when they first came out, I got a 30 and was content until the saltist with the lower gear ratio came out. I got a Baja last year and am satisfied, am unsure whether to get another (charkbait has a sale) due to there being discontinued.
