Just picked up my first real cod jigging combo from bass pro shops. I got an Ugly Stick BWB1120 which is 8 feet and rated for 40-80lb. And for a real i got a Saltist 30h which holds 230 yards of 25lb test. The question i have is about line. Should i use mono or braid? Color? Topshot? Test? I was also wondering what i should set the drag at.

Nick,

I have two Saltist 30's that I use for cod jigging. I would definitely recommend using braid along with a top-shot of mono. I use Sufix Performance braid in green, but may switch to his-vis yellow the next time I lose enough line to refill, as the yellow is easy to spot when caught in a tangle.

I have filled these reels more than once and you can either load up:

An entire 300 yard spool of 50lb braid with about 25 yards of mono or dracon backing and a 30-50' topshot of 40 or 50lb mono.

An entire 300 yard spool of 65lb braid with enough backing to just cover the bottom of the spool (or no backing and use tape) and a 30' topshot of 50lb mono.

If you are using it for casting heavy cod jigs, I would go with the 65lb braid.

I like to fill up with as much braid as possible, because fishing on party boats will always result in losing line to tangles and/or boat rash at some point.

I'm glad to hear that Shakespeare is still offering the BWB1120 as I thought they were discontinued in late 2005. I have the similar style 8' Ugly Stik (USCB 1180-XH) and really like it for jigs 12oz or less. 14oz is ok, but at 16oz and up, that rod feels overloaded and to bouncy at the tip.

Thanks Todd i think im going to go with the tape instead of backing and the 65lb braid with the 30 foot topshot. Ill hopefully be throwing a 12oz lav for the first trip with this. Bass Pro Shops has the BWB1120 in stock. Thanks for your help, I'll report back

Tried spooling a couple of reels doing the tape thing and the spectra didn 't stay tight on the spool. I now spool with a little mono first then the spectra, mono works better for me. Also pack it on super tight and crowsfoot it every 30 yds. or so. Helps keep the spectra from digging into the spool when its under a heavy load. If a tackle shop is convenient suggest taking it there and having them put it on with a line-winder. I also have wet-packed it on off the back of the boat on the way out, that has worked for me also. Gets it on the spool tight.

Chumslk is correct as tape it not always enough to avoid slippage.

I found that the Saltist is ok as the spool has a peg on it. Tie your braid directly to the peg and then tape. By attaching directly to the peg and taping, you should have no slippage. There will be directions with a pic in the Saltist owners manual on doing this.

I wind all my reels with a cheapy $25 Berkley Line Winder that you can find at most Dick's, Walmarts, etc or online. Like Chumslk mentioned, make sure you wind up braid nice and tight. With this line winder do the oposite how you normally spool on mono and load the braid by feeding it to the reel from the bottom of the braid spool.
