Your best bet would be to take the boasic boating course offered by the Power squadron or the Coast Guard Auxilliary. My personal preference is for the one given by the Power Squadron but they are both good courses.

I know this might sound dumb to some but I think the best thing to do is hire a captain for a day. There in every fishing magazine and will give you hands on training. This is the way I would go if I was trying to learn. The first time we went tuna fishing this is what we did and it worked out great

Hiring a captain for a day might be good idea AFTER you take the basic boating course. There is way too much to learn to be able to do it in one day, and if someone tries to teach the basics without a true lesson plan he is sure to leave something out.

Taking the course is the best advice

Don't be afraid to ask other boaters for advice/help, you'll find some real nice people out on the water.

Practice, practice, practice - docking and manuevering might seem tricky at first, but with practice it will come to you.

Good luck

Good luck codkid :)

Its a class on boats, If your your into it it's fun. and you'll be amazed at how much you learn.

Getting a cap to take you out isn't a bad idea if you are a little anxious about going out yourself. the first time I went out I dredged the bay for about a mile. I probably would have benefited from have someone with me to teach me the ropes........But I agree with makomike, you need to know the rules of the water before you learn to operate the boat. It would be like learning to drive without getting you learners permit.
