Greetings Noreast community,

My name is Lou and I am new to the world of boating.
I just purchased a 11' inflatable boat (should be getting in about two weeks.) This is the model I picked up
I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions/advice.
I live in Mill Basin, nears kings plaza mall, and was wondering what would be good launch sites. I'm kind of nervous about taking the boat to far out, so I wanted to stay closer to shore, any good fishing spots I should target? At the moment I'm to broke to pick up an outboard motor, happen soon :)

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to seeing you guys out on the water.

Tight lines,
-Lou

Hey Lou

Welcome to Noreast.

The best advice is simply to follow all the rules and boating laws.

Use common sense and a little common courtesy........they go a long way.

There is a ton of info right here on the different boards...........use the search feature for any info you are looking for and start from there............

Enjoy..................

Pick up a paper chart from your local bait and tackle and usually they have some areas highlighted where there are good fishing spots.

I don't know the area you are talking about but there must be places to launch. The chart may also have some spots to launch.

Also at the top of the home page here go to the Boat fishing box and right below it click on the Boat ramp box and just put in your zip code and there will be more than enough options.

wow, thank you for all the comments guys. I really appreciate them.
I have been reading tons of posts on this site and its seems like a very close community, I'm really looking forward to contributing to the NE family.

I def. plan on taking a boat safty course, we could never be to safe out there.
I will check and see if Bernies Bait and Tackle has any local charts.

So here is a list of things I plan on picking up.
*anchor
*1st aid kit
* flash lights
* life vest and a life ring
* cooler, just incase I want to keep a fish, even though I practice catch and release.

Any thing else you guys think I might need?

Again, thanks for all of the suggestions/advice, and the warm welcomes.

I'm not sure what the coast guard regs are regarding small boats like you have but you may need a fire extinguisher and a horn also. The aerosol can type horn since the boat doesn't have one. Even if you don't need the horn and extinguisher for the CC regs I would still want each on the boat.

You may want to get a handheld GPS to mark all those great spots you find.

Also if you are going out at night you need to have lights bow and stern.

Since you said "we could never be too safe out there" you need a PFD for each person on the boat.

Strong Arm . . .

Hi,

Since you don't have a motor yet, you might be into checking out the Kayak forums for stuff they keep on board.
I am sure you will find a used decent motor pretty cheaply. Don't exceed your maximum horsepower rating on the back. 11 feet should handle a lot more than is necessary anyway.
Talk to some of the marina folks near you, you might be able to launch from their marinas during certain hours.
If you have a dolly or hand truck, you can launch someplace in Gerritsen Beach... you have to watch for sharp objects though.
On the other side of the Marine Parkway Bridge, there is Gateway Marina where I am. Try talking to the folks at the office and maybe you can launch from there. I think the issue will be parking wherever you go.
There is a boat launch ramp at B108th Street in Rockaway. I am not sure if you want to use cement though.

Good Luck,
vk

you guys are great, all these suggestons are super helpful.
I didn't even think about an air horn or fire extinguisher, but I see both coming in very handy.

So I've been looking around for a motor, but I am not sure what I should go with. The boat is rated for a 15hp max, but these motors are way out of my price range. How many HP would be a decent amount for an 11 footer? I was also looking into maybe getting a trolling motor instead. What do you guys think about this?

thanks

I was just going to say, perhaps a good electric trolling motor will get you where you need to go. Watch out for bigger boats. Seems the biggest boats show the least amount of courtesy, respect and responsibility on the water. You can get into the areas where the big boats can't stay back deep in the bays and you will catch more fish and bigger fish than those that spend lots of money on fuel heading to the ocean. I would get in touch with marinas and boat yards and see if they have any motors they are getting rid of that still run. You would be suprised what you can get for free. Jimmy (god bless his soul) at Smitty's would replace his motors every year and always had some for sale. Not sure if Delores does the same. Not sure if the place still exists.

I started out with a inflatable boat.

You need a whistle or an air horn. I would also look into getting a solid floor for the air floor.
A electric trolling motor is good, you'd want a gel or agm battery do you don't leak acid all over your boat and cloths. Been there done that.
Don't forget the life vest.
