my two cents....

Recently went to Mexico and stayed at the Barcelo Maya Palace all inclusive resort in mid-May. This is a little south of Playa del Carmen. The Palace is a brand new resort and was very nice. We traveled with four other couples and we all had a great experience there. Puerto Adventuras is the fishing port which is less than ten minutes away from the resort. I booked a day on a 31 Bertram (Reel Screamer) with Capt Rick?s fleet. It was just my wife and I fishing and we landed one white marlin, raised several others, and landed two sailfish (~80# fish). Plenty of big mahi to play with and several cudas. Captain and mate both worked hard to get us on the fish. After the white and sailfish they tried hard to raise a blue marlin for the billfish slam. What was really nice to see is there dedication to catch and release and ensuring the billfish fish were released healthy. I couldn?t find a tournament style charter so I went with Capt Rick?s fleet. Boat/crew and gear were good. Trolled five lines and dragged two teasers. All dead bait but very good quality. I brought some of my own skirts for the hoo. Everyday had steady 15+ knot breeze. While nice by the pool, it kicked up the seas a bit. The nice thing is fishing is five minutes out of the slip and a couple miles off the beaches. Seas were typical of a day in the NE. The mate said it is flat ass calm in mid-summer, but as you would expect, the fishing is no were near as productive, plus you start getting into peak hurricane season!

Isle Mujeres would be the best fishing location on the Yucatan side. Obviously the fishing is going to depend on the time of the year you go.

We stayed at the resort most of the time. No need to leave the pool, beach and swim up bar. We did go into Playa del Carmen one day. It was hot and nothing but junk vendors trying to get you into their stores.

I would go back to this resort and fish with Capt. Ricks again. Hope this helps!

It sounds like you are thinking about the Caribbean area. Keep in mind that the time of year makes all the difference in the world. From Jan-March, wind is always an issue. The boats will go but will stay near port and the fishing will probably not be great unless you like barracuda on heavy tackle. Summer and fall are probably the best fishing months but also the best times to be in the Northeast.

Cabo is my all time favorite. Fishing, scenery, great food and entertainment, lots of outdoor activities, it has it all. I go nearly every March. Average 1+marlin per day plus tuna, mahi, mako, and all the bottom fish you could want.

At that time of year I would say it depends on your tolerance for air travel. Want a relatively short easy, direct flight? Go to Costa Rica. Can stand a little longer with one or two changes in planes? Go to Cabo, can tolerate a long flight to get to a near perfect destination? Go to the Kona/Kailua coast of Hawaii.

If you look at the pictures in the link you can see we got 5 marlin (the flags). What you can't see is we lost one.

Kona is great but I've had lousy luck fishing there. One wahoo in four days on the water didn't do much for me.

That's why they call it fishing and not catching.
We've been skunked once or twice when fishing Kons, OTOH we have had days when we caught several marlin, both blues and stripeys. Also at that time of year you have a shot at a shortnosed spearfish, which is one the most difficult fish to find of all the billfishes. When you combine the offshore fishing with the casting around the reefs, you have a real winning combination. Some of the reef fish I've caught were so so pretty and they put up a good fight on light tackle.

I'm pretty preferable to Kona myself.
LOL The bite really depends on the time of year you want to fish. All big game species can be caught year round but usually better towards the spring and summer months ( although we had 2 granders this year at the end of March and beginning of April). The past month has seen some really good fish caught with loads of decent sized Marlin coming into Honokohau Harbor and quite a few gorilla ahi being boated by some charter guys and commercial fisherman. Big time tournaments kick off this weekend with the Kona Classic and continuing on thru September. Another option that is becoming popular are night fishing for swordfish and sharks. Some big threshers up to 900 lbs. being tag and released in the past few weeks.

Have fun where ever you chose to vacation.

Scroll down for recent Kona reports
