Just looking for some advice.

My computer is acting up a lot lately, getting tired.

What is the best deal for a new PC, that is used for working.

I don't do anything fancy. No music no hitecj programs, just email, lotus approach for my data, and surfing the nrt, bust mostly noreast.

Also I have no idea how to transfer the info from the old one to the new one.

No it doent have a gopher in it, and Jerry can't help me.

Linc,
There is another thread with a similar title with some good info in it. If you old 'puter has a cd/rw the easiest way to copu stuff is to put it onto a cd and then use that to transfer it to your new machine.

Can you tell that in english Mike? lol

I have a huge lotus approach file that has my business contact data base in it. I could lose everything but that and not die, if I lose that I am flying blind.

Linc,
Your best bet is to buy one of these MY BOOKS 500g
Use this to transfer all your files and pictures. Then on your new system you can just dump it all in there. Then once your system is up and running use this to do back ups just incase your system ever crashes.

As far as PC's ...how much do you want to spend?
Are you only going to surf and use MS office? or pictures and music on your ipod if you have one.

Hurry Up!

If you act quickly you can still get a reasonable PC running XP. But that supposedly ends sometime in June. After that the only things Microsoft wants to allow to run XP are so cheep and slow that you don't want them.

Dell has some pretty good laptop deels right now. Hop on their site and search for "laptop xp" to find them.

Its the XP conspiracy theory..

Microsoft said(yeah like they keep their word) that June 30 will be the dead line for OEM's to include XP but system builders can continue until January 2009. MS will support XP long after June and probadly like they said into April of 2014.

No Ipod, surfing and a few pics, nothing close to G pics. mostly rust lol.

I figure I want something nice, but I don't need overkill. I was thinking if I could get away with two grand for all the bells and whistle I would be happy.

Thanks Tony.

Because of the demand for low cost computers in developing nations.
You need higher end computers to properly run Vista.

You all mean 2 GIGABYTES of RAM!!!!

Sheesh, haven't had KB in years!

And now I measure hard drive space in Terabytes. I'm sporting a hefty 2.5 TB mass storage to go with my 4 GB of RAM and native Quad core processor.

Yeah, when I power her up the house lights dim and the power meter spins like the A/C is on...

In a "virtual" sense, yes, but the cold "not so hard" reality is not a bit!!!

It does make a lovely space heater. During the last string of miserable weather, the warmest place in the house for a nap was the computer room...
