Crazy,

I have a Loomis 11ft surf rod and need to purchase a reel for it. I was going to go with the VS250, but I may also purchase a 9ft rod in the near future. Could I get away with buying a VS200 and using it on both. Being a fly fisher I know one rod and reel does not do it all. Thanks for any input.

Hello SurfDevil,

This is a very interesting question and it's all a matter on the application and keeping a well balanced equipment!

I have an 11' Surf rods and depending on the area I fish… I generally will alternate it with a VS300 or VS250.

In the other hand, if I am fishing back bays and small jetties, my 10-ft. is armed with the VS250 and at times with the VS200. As for the 9ft. (Backbays / North shore / tossing small payloads) the ideal reel is the VS150.

Now back to your question…
Do I think the Loomis 11 ft. is good with the VS250. YES!

Do I think the VS250 is good for the 9 ft.? NO! (not balanced - too bottom heavy)!

Would I use the VS200 on an 11 ft. NO! (Too light).

If I were in your shoe… I would buy the VS250 and keep it balance with the 11'! When you purchase the 9ft… use it with the 250 until you are ready for the other. This way… You will at least have one balanced outfit!

Since you fly fish - Similar to a fly fishing outfit… Would you use a 12-wt. reel on an 8wt rod? ;)

Hope you can appreciate my reasoning. :)

Tight Lines!

Crazy,

Thanks for the info again. I was thinking the same thing, just wanted to do the right thing.

I have no problem to buy 2 reels, but it is hard to hide them from the wife.

For some reason fishing reels stand out. lol
