Hello all,

Well with old man winter looming it's time for me to start thinking about projects to carry me over the next couple of months.

One thing that I intend to do is replace my existing GPS. I see Navman electronics have been advertising hard the past year. Does anybody have experience with these instruments?

They have this GPS that has caught my eye b/c it has a fuel monitoring system for outboards (ie flow rate, etc.). Sounds cool to me. I always wanted to know exactly how much fuel I am using at different speeds and conditions.

The price for the lowest unit with this feature is somewhere in the high $300.00 plus the tranducer for the fuel system is ~ $150.00. It is my feeling if I shop real hard during the winter and work the boat shows accordingly I can get into it for ~$500.

Your thoughts, opinions, experiences, and suggestions are welcomed as always. I am looking for a good Mountable Unit, most likely a Chart Plotter, Color preferred. I am looking to spend ~$500. I got an excellent FF during last winters boat shows Si-tex CVS 106L (Color) for about the same money. So I assume I can for the GPS as well.

Thanks,

somoan

P.S. I'd love a northstar, but don't think I can afford it.

Look into the Garmin line. I think you will get a better deal and like what they have to offer better. I dont think you really need the flow rate. Unless its for all the canyon trips you do. What I am saying is spend the money more wisely for features that will benefit you. Our runs dont really rely on fuel consumption to much. Yeah it is nice to know the fuel burn, But its a lot nicer having a good plotter. Guys who have Garmin's love them.

I love my Northstar, I sometimes rely on it to much though. It may be cheaper for you to buy a new Yami motor with floscan than buy a Northstar:)

Navman fuel flow meters have a good reputation. They're the exact same unit as the Standard Horizon, but at a lower price. You can buy the ff meter alone for $150 or so. IMHO I think it makes more sense to buy the ff meter and the gps separately. That being said, the guys with ff meters love them. One will by going on my boat this winter.
