We should designate a channel on the horn? If that is what you are suggesting I'm for it!

How about ch. 70?

67, 68, 69, & 72 always seem to crowded.

What about DSC. How many of you have it...and if so up and running? Exchanging DSC #'s is another way to go.

DSC

It is a distress signal on your radio that is interfced with your GPS. If you use it will send out a signal to other boats that have this also. It is supposed to be able to go to the CG but they are not ready for it yet.

DSC

Bill and others,

DSC (Digital Selective Calling)

Main Function:

is to serve as a distress signal like Baywatch said. It MUST be interfaced with your GPS in order to use it correctly for the distress method.

In other words, If it is not interfaced with the GPS and you hit the Distress Button it will not relay your position (LAT/LONG) to other boats that have DSC.

The Coast Guard, once they are outfitted properly will know:

-how many people are expected on the vessel

- the name of the vessel

-cell phone #'s that may be on the boat (ie: yours, and some of your regular crews)

-emergency contact #'s ashore

and more!

I have posted alot on this topic b/f....many of you may want to do a search on DSC in this site.

Again, for your position to be relayed it must be hooked up to a GPS that communicates by NMEA language. Most of today's GPS use NMEA.

ALL VESSELS THAT HAVE DSC CAPABILITY WILL HEAR YOUR MAYDAY AND RECEIVE YOUR POSITION INFORMATION

Second function:

Acts like a telephone or should I say Nextel on the water.

You see each individual owner gets a DSC # and this is much like your telephone #.

You can make various types of calls...General(private), All Ships, and I believe Security.

With the All Ships it is almost like a distress. In so far as every boat with a DSC radio will start ringing.

The Security call...I can not speak of I have never used it. But from what I understand it is for exactly that. Warn people of dangerous weather or floating debris.

General or private calls are a little different. Let's say you know that a friend of yours is out fishing and you want to hook up with him, but you forgot what channel he monitors all the time.

If you have his DSC # in the radio you can HAIL him to whatever channel you prefer. If he is on 70, and you are on 72 it will call his radio...it will ring like a telephone and switch his radio to YOUR channel.

This will work regardless of whether or not the unit is hooked up to a GPS.

Oh yeah, there is nothing private about the conversation one the connection has been made, everyone can still hear your convo!

Go here for a free DSC #, it is actually called an MMSI #, for Mobile Marine Service Identity

There is no charge for the # or it's use. You only need a radio with DSC capability.

FYI

I have received a few PM's asking asking a variety of forms of the same question.

You do not have to be a menber of BoatUS to sign and get an MMSI #

If any of you do sign up, they often email back to you a confirmation along with your MMSI #. It will have your password and username in case you want to log on and make changes to your "information" (ie: cell phone #'s, etc). I have saved this to a CD as well as have a copy in a folder on my computer.
