I am going to Myrtle Beach, SC, in June. I have never fished there and do not know any boats, charters or anything else. I plan on bringing my own tackle.

Can anybody giveme some direction on, species, of the type of fish that is best, and size and typeof rods and reals, of tackle to cover anything that can be caught on a head boat, any good head boat.

Thanks,
Lazybones

I live in Charleston, SC (1.5 hours south of MB) and came from NY originally. The fish are somewhat the same but catching them is way different. I would suggest a medium weight spinning combo with a Carolina rig (hi-lo) baited with cut shrimp for anything from Bluefish to Whiting. You can throw tins for bluefish or get some small menhaden for live lining. Redfish are out now and if you can find a dock or a pier with lots of barnacles there are sheepshead. Check out www.charlestonfishing.net for reports near Myrtle beach.

There are head boats in Murrell's Inlet (south of MB) and in Little River NC (north of MB). I have been out of both ports and they are both ok. I would stay away from any of the half day trips, went on two 1/2 day trips for sea bass and had two keepers (lots of shorts). The gulf stream trips are good (12 hours w/ 6 hours of fishing) for grouper, bee-liners, etc with the occaisional mahi, AJ or king mack. Bring your own squid (boats have salted squid) and cigar minnows or sardines for grouper.
