Try different times and tides and you will find out what works best. Best way is to get out on the water.

What kind of kayak do you have ? You might consider fishing outside the harbor too. I had some good days out there last year for fluke, blues and porgies. Make sure you have a visible flag on the yak to make your kayak more visible.

I have been kayaking in the harbor and enjoying. What is the best tide to fish?

Thanks

Key to fishing the harbor is moving water. Certain spots produce on the in and others will produce on the out. Trial and error.

I'm from the ebb school of Mt. Sinai fishing...

Running tide is the key, but if you want to make out like a bandit with bass, I'd stick with outgoing. Paddle along the grass banks looking for little "rivers" of outgoing water and drop you lures into them. The fish sit there waiting for dinner to be pushed into their mouths. Just do 5 or so casts at each place. If there's a fish there, you'll know in the first couple of casts. Then move to the next.

My favorite is a 3 or 4 AM high tide so you have nice running water at first light, but it needn't be limited to evening and mornings. One Sunday when we returned from the Sound at noon and there was a long line at the boat ramp, I dropped my Dad off to get the trailer. I looked and figured I had at least 1/2 hr to fish before he would be at the ramp and I hit 3 or so spots and caught 2 bass.

Then when you think you have it all figured out......

You will be dilly dalling during slack figuring ahhhhh, nothing doin during this tide, why the heck would a bass hit when there is no moving water, nothing coming out of the drains......so you sit back....toss your line out not expecting to get nothing much......then all **** breaks loose and you get spooled to your backing, then you watch that rip out as well, then it's all over.....
Never under estimate slack tide. ;)

So right. I've been fishing that harbor for close to 20 yrs and always find something new about it. Been spooled many times too.
