new boat has an 89' merc 470, with a FWC system. while running today, engine overheated since i wasent paying attention to my guages
boat overheated pretty **** bad, smoking to holy **** and spewing anti0freeze to the bilge. if you were in jones this morning, i was the idiot with the smoke pouring from my engine, and doing the tow-of-shame back home.

ive ran the boat 4x prior to this, and quite hard in thursdays weather with no issue. only difference is today, since i left on dead low tide, i only have about 3.3ft in my canal, and i got a bit too close to the edge and was kicking up some nasty black muck. (had no choice, was a bulk-head barge parked in canal)

im assuming i have some sort of restriction of water flow somewhere now? but where do i start looking, and could me kicking up muck have caused it?? i would think so since i had no issues prior to this running the engine in water, or out with ears.

nope, boats still sitting idle. went down with the intention of following some of the posts, but just got too intimidated by what i was doing, got frustrated and left without much progress to be completely honest.

i get frustrated way too easily when i dont know what im doing, and trying to follow written directions isnt one of my strong points.

so at this rate ill be paying to have her gone through so i dont waste anymore of my $1600 docking fee not out there fishing
If you didn't live half way to NYC I'd help you do it. Sometimes there is equity in peace of mind though and having an experienced mechanic do it may be best.
I hear ya Newbie. I was pretty much the same way as you UNTIL I owned a boat and paid for my first few repairs via mechanic ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$). What happened next was, I said to myself...hey at least TRY to fix it, and if I can't, then I'll spend the $$ on the mechanic. Bought my boat back in 95, made my first self repair in 98, and have fixed everything myself since (except replacing the rotted oil pan- I wasnt up to lifing the engine out lol).

One thing I learned that is a GREAT help, is having a second person with you, even if its someone who knows absolutely NOTHING about anythin! I found that like you, when I went down to do repairs alone, I would think, and stare and procrastinate for hours! When I had someone there, I would say..."ok, this is the problem, I'm going to try this, and do this" and then do it. It's amazing what just having someone to TALK to can do for you, even if they don't know anything!

Newbie, if you're upper middle class and have a decent size pot to pee in, get someone to fix your boat, and get out and enjoy it. If like me your pot is more like a coffee can, print out this thread, drag SOMEONE down with you, and do SOMETHING- because youre missing out on something you love. Your overheating problem is really not a complicated one AT ALL. You just need to set your mind to getting it done.

I'm tellin' ya dude, get yourself the repair manual and read it. The pictures and descriptions help you figure it out a lot. That riser will have like four long bolts to take out and the whole thing comes off. Real simple. Seloc, West Marine, buy one (the manual that is, not the store.) This is the kind of repair that you really can't screw up when you take the part off. Just remember what you did to get it off, have that other person with you write down the steps you take and draw simple stupid diagrams. Use a notebook, take pictures with your cell phone or better yet a digital camera. This repair is easy to do and will give you confidence in your skills to fix minor to moderate things. You'll save $100 an hour every time.

ok, wasent the thermometer, as when i got home and boiled it, it popped.

i have no luck with boats, i swear. the anti-freeze in my oil now is far from giving me any warm fuzzy feelings

3 months and no progress
We should hang out

We can get together, grab some beers, and talk about all the things we're going to do to our boats
