Hey guys

Anyone check out the inlet the lately? Wondering if it is any worse than last year.

Also, I read in Newsday a few days ago that since the plane memorial at Smith Point is in danger of the surf they are thinking of moving sand from the inlet over to the memorial. I have not followed up on this to actually see if this was true and is really going to happen. Anyone else hear anything?

Hoping to be able to feel more comfortable with the inlet this year. Last year seems everytime I went to make my run the weather or the inlet was not cooperating...

Buddy of mine camped on Smittys this weekend and said the beach has been closed to 4x4's. He took a stroll along the shoreline and told me the beach is ripped to crap, said you couldn't drive on it if you wanted to! I take this to mean that the Winter did a number on this area and hence can't imagine the inlet being better this year than it was last. JMO

They did some dreging from Forge river to Harts cove. The bouys where all over the place.
I took a ride to the inlet and you have to do the same as last year getting out.It is nasty for sure. Take a S/ W heading almost even with the beach and look for the opening where there aren't any breakers.:(

There was a shoal just esat of the second red bouy after the bridge that looks like it goes rioght across the channel.

I havn't been that way in about 2-3 weeks but a low tide that shoal was only 2 1/2 ft. Take a ride at high tide and check it out. Hopefully they moved the bouys back in posotiion after the ice we had.

Write letters complaining to these big shots . Just maybe one of them will get of there a$$ and save a few lives .

Thousands of boaters use that Inlet . But there are a few people with there million dollar homes along the beach that complain about there views being messed up if they put Jettys along the beach and make it a navicable Inlet .

Whats more important there views or peoples lives ? How about the Money that the boating industry produces for the area .
I guess these wealthy people have the polititions in there pockets . It makes me sick !! Write letters please ..

Thanks M/M for the address's. I hear that they have a planned dredging in the fall of this year.

Sure right in the fall run for the bass.

It is really horrible out there. That schoal is right in front of the inlet and is only about 6 ft deep. I have seen many novice boaters try take on the breakers. I was holding my breathe when watching.:(
Thats why I recomend running a little west of the jetty and and shoot the hole in the breakers especially at low tide. The hole that you go thriugh is about 200 yards wide and in about 15 ft of water so it isn't to bad, just be carefull.

To bad though they hold some nice fish in the old dredge hole there. Just got to take your time getting out.

Good Info Baywatch. Looks like another exciting year:)

My wife and buddy didn't believe me when I told them how nasty that inlet gets when we first starting fishing the Moriches area about 5 years ago, or how quick it will change on you after you make your way out. They used to bust my chops (to be nice about it) all the time to get out to the Ocean and avoid the weekend crowds. Caused alot of debates with most going my way:) But...it took one adventure filled run back with Lori sitting on the deck hugging a seat post while I swear I heard my bud Ted next to me praying to God that he'd stop drinking if he made the beach to change their opinion:)

They need to make it safer. I did find some info and put the link in another post below. But it does look like some dredging will be happening this year Nov / Dec 2003.

Tight lines and be safe.

We have been fishing Moriches Inlet for the last 12 years in our 24' Topaz and from what I can see the inlet changes throughout every season. We always used to run out of the inlet hugging the east jetty then hugging the beach towards the east. Now it seems like our old pathway has filled in and we are running southwest looking for that gap in the breakers. It would be a lot safer and nicer if they would dredge the inlet. The boat is getting splashed this saturday. I cant wait for the season to begin.

The mouth of the inlet appears to be silted up from the eastern side, although i fished from the shore, it appears the best access would have been toward the western end, but the way the waves were moving across the mouth (east to west) leads me to believe that it's not for the faint hearted or inexperienced.
I spoke with the Smith Point guys and had it confirmed that the outer beach is closed, however that this is reviewed daily around the peak of the tide. They will make the "opening" call on a daily basis. Have the number to call at home, will post it tomorrow.
So for now there are no 4x4's on the western end of the jetty. On the East side..it appeared quite shallow seemingly along the entire length of the jetty and from the wall to about 7o to 100 yards into the channel.
I did see some boats working the bay side north of the inlet, most tended toward the western channel.

With all of this East Wind...

As well as the southeast wave set that we've had plenty of this past year -- I'm surprised that Moriches inlet isn't fully sanded in by now. I noticed a lot of sand on the east side of Jones Inlet too, and was wondering how Moriches was fairing? After sailing out of Moriches for over 20 years and making the move west to Jones for the last 10 years I like to keep up with the goings on out east. It seems that the Government only gets involved when the inlet is just about sanded in. I think your only hope for this year will be if we get some nice Southwesterly wind which usually clears the sand out of the inlet.

The research that has been done mentioned By putting Jettys along the eastern beach and bringing out the rocks 200' on the eastern side could make this Inlet Navicable .

When they proposed doing this the Wealthy ones with the fancy homes on the eastern beach fought it . So because of a couple of dozen homes don't want the Jettys thousands of us not so fortunate boaters and fisherman risk our familys lives every day durring the summer running that Inlet . Something is not right with this picture .

The work in November does not include the front of the Inlet at all ! Maybe the'll just remove a little sand just to say they did .

This is a major problem for many but have yet to see much of a fight to get this Inlet in shape . This I can't understand , why are there no petetions or articles or something to have the Gov make this Inlet safer ? I would think if you get Thousands of screaming Boaters something might get done already ! What do I know .

SOS>>>>

Same Old Story...we all talk about about it but what do we do about it.

Does anyone write letters? I know I don't but with the above links maybe we can.

Why don't the people from the Moriches Inlet area get together from here and find out what clubs use this inlet and see if theres is a petition or format letter that you can sign.

I honestly do not use the inlet that for this specific reason, it is a little further to FI for me and that is why I fish there.

I would put my John Han**** to something like that, and I am sure a lot of other members would also.

Yes Bill I have written letters myself and would love to see this as a start of action . Power in numbers , Maybe someone knows a lawyer ( we also have a few on this board ) that can put together a letter . This can become a Petition that can be spread around tackle shops , Marinas etc ...

Yesterday (April 21st) I took a ride from Blue Point to Moriches Inlet just to check it out. Good sized breakers at the mouth of the inlet, and did not venture out. However, I noticed some very shallow spots, even on the buoys, as I approached the inlet from the west. I'd be reluctant to make the run at night under these conditions. In spots, it seems to be getting worse.

tuna I live on the beach your talking about and also fish moriches.I dont ever
recall the residents complaining about
jettys . the army corp and fed gov
control the beach since the washout and the law suit. and if they feel it
needs jettys they would be there just
like the string fences they dont have to
ask permission from the residents . in fact the people I talk to think they would be good for the beach.

GVISKO , First I'd like to say my name calling is just because of frustration , not to get personal hope you understand .
I got this info from a retired comercial Striped Bass fisherman who lived and fished there his whole life . This happened quite some time ago This weekend I will stop by his house and find out about how long ago this happened . It wasn't recent I can tell you that .

Thats a Hook Up for sure

Hi there George.

An idea for you to present to the people there. Apperently you are quite active in the area. or must have been at one time when they filled in the breach there.

If we could put something together, a combined effort between your communtiy, local fish clubs and members here we have something going.

Sometimes things have to start somewhere and this is a good as any. I hope you chime in for this one.:)

Moriches Inlet being nasty and impassible is nothing new. fished there with my father from thr late 50's till early 80's.many times we would have to come back in thru shine**** because the inlet was impassible.the bars and shoals changed constantly.if i am not mistaken theinlet was offiacially closed for some time.it has always been one of the most dangerous inlets on the east coast.have seen quite a few overturned boats in the inlet.

Moriches Inlet - "Unnavigable Waters"

It is my understanding that Moriches Inlet has been characterized as having "unnavigable waters." In fact, I understand that some charts have statements to that effect.

Some marine insurance policies may exclude coverage in "unnavigable waters." If you go out of Moriches Inlet, check your marine insurance policy to see if there is an exclusion for this kind of water. If so, be advised that your insurance company could disclaim if you had an accident in Moriches Inlet.

Many companies do not have this kind of "unnavigable water" exclusion. Be safe - check your policy!
