Hey guys,

I was thinking of going on a 2 day tuna trip out of montauk. The date that looks good is the 30th of Sept. But there is only a crescent moon on that day. Does it really affect the fishing. I've heard mixed reports but I need to know if im wasting my time and lots of money. Any help is appreciated.

The theories I've heard is that the fish turn off during and right after a full moon...The reasoning to this theory is that the fish feed heavily at night during the pre-full moon due to the night time light, and then are pretty fed during the day, and the nights after...I don't believe it..

In my oppinion, your trip is timed right, the weather and offshore water temperatures and Gulf Stream eddies are much more important than the moon....

So keep the date if it's only the moon that is bothering you...

The moon!

Well I used to believe in the moon theory and have caught excellent catches when most say your wasting your time. I could remeber my good friend would not go on a tuna trip with us because it was a full moon. Well big mistake on his part had them from 4:30pm till 4:30 am 72 yellow fins later we headed home and that made the moon theroy wrong. Personally i know some sharpies that would troll on a full moon and do well. But As to your question i think the bait and water temp has a greater affect on fishing then the moon. The way this year seems to be going for the offshore fishing is a hit and miss trips these days for now. When the fish start to school up for there winter run and they turn on to the bait then your chances of doing well increase. Hope you have a good trip and think positive it will help .
