I took the family to the Montauk St. Pattys Day parade yesterday. It was a lot of fun and the weather was perfect.

What I find strange is here we are in NY largest commercial fishing port and the so called "sport fish capital of the world" and there was no representative of: the East Hampton Baymans Association, The Montauk Boatmen and Captains Association, the Long Island Commercial Fishing Association.....what gives?

There were a couple recreational marinas and the USCG represented.

I told my kids next year we will tow our skiff and hand out Bonac Cookies (quahogs);).

I don't remember those groups ever being represented per se. A lot of their members marched under other banners.

I was out there fishing yesterday and have to say people really are pigs. When we were leaving the parade was over and what a fn mess they left. What is wrong with lazy a$$ dip Chits that cannot clean up after themselves?

A group of my friends and I went out there yesterday too. I drove, and brought my dogs. I wasn't drinking but my friends were, as we've always done in the past. I've been to the parade a few times and this was the worst as far at the cops busting chops. Any cup they saw someone with, they made dump it out in case it was beer. So people in disgust a lot of times just threw the cups down on the ground too. And to top it off, some of the bars were closed, so it was packing in at the Point, or O'Murphy's and that was it. If they want to be Nazi's they can do it on their own. I know we won't be going back anymore.

The Captains' Association did march in the parade regularly during the early - mid '80s when I was an active member. Perhaps the increased alcohol use changed the interest and need to participate. Newsday painted a not-so-rosey picture of the over-indulgence of some at yesterday's event. Unfortunately, as many of us know, the poor judgements and inappropriate actions of a minority of jerks can often ruin a good time. Apparently, on their return home, some folks were arrested on the LIRR for fighting and unruly activities. One train was delayed for about an hour.

Hunt n' Fish, I don't think the point about Nazi enforcement is fair. I'm sure the police were doing what they were directed to do. Let's consider families that go there and suddenly are inundated with a nearby group of boisterous drunks swearing or whatever. I doubt if the Montauk residents wish that type of image for their community and parade. Please believe me ... I'm not trying to sound holier than thou. I like to drink as much as most people do, but I can go to a tavern to do it, not consume on the street. Besides, times are changing. We're not reliving Prohibition, but with today's consequences of DWI & DUI i.e. possible loss of license, serious jail time, etc., people just don't drink as much as in the past. I doubt very much that the St. Pat's parade in Manhattan is the same as it was decades ago when I attended as a rambunctious college student. Yes, Times are a changing!

The parade organizers even asked the LIRR to cancel the train that arrives just before the parade starts because it is full of drunks. They didn't, but the RR didn't allow drinking on the train and there was a large police presence.

I've stopped going to the parade. Too many idiots with the simple goal of getting smashed and leaving trash everywhere. It's gotten so bad that many estabishments, including bars, close down for the day. What used to be a nice small town event has turned into a mess. I think many people out here would not mind seeing them cancel this...
