I have a 27 foot boat with twin 225's. I'm heading out to montauk in the middle of july. I was out 40 miles in the FHA with no problem. Can I reach any of canyons to do some tuna or mahi when I'm there.
On a nice day, most certainly. Your looking at a 60 mile run to good areas. Ive seen small 23 footers at the Fishtails on flat-calm days. You just have to watch the weather carefully thats all.
27 feet is plenty boat for running to the canyons. Pick your days wisely, and be safe. I suggest fishing somebody else's boat first that has some canyon trips under the belt, or bring somebody out that is experienced with canyon fishing that can show you the ropes of the fine art of canyon fishing.
PARROTHEAD, sorry, I deleted your last post by accident. You said you burn anywhere from 20 to 30 gph. You didn't mention what your ground speed was in relation to those numbers. Also, what kind of boat do you run?
And you don't have to run to the canyons for good fishing either. Bluefin, mahi and sharks can all be caught right in the mudhole to the Southeast of Block Island around that time. . . When they are in there.
The fishtails is about 65 miles from the point. West Atlantis is about 75 miles east atlantis about 85 miles and the 100-square area of the Hudson is 90 miles. All distances are straight lines and approximate.
