After recouperating from surgery and having not fished for what will be 7 months by then I'd like to get out to Montauk in May and get in on some of the infamous early season doormat fluking and striped bass fishing.

Having always fished in my own backyard, places to stay and boats to fish on is something I know nothing about. So, I'm looking for suggestons on partyboat, charterboats and lodging. I want to reserve next week so I don't get shut out. Also would like some suggestions on best dates to go? The wife will probably come so the lodging should be pretty decent.

Thanks,

The fluke season will probably open around May 10th. Check the new regs when they appear on this site.

Partyboats will be doing both half and full day trips different days of the week. You will need to check their schedules. Also, I would recommend fishing weekdays only since the weekends will be very crowded. Boats I recommend are the Sea Otter, Marlin V and Marlin VI. The Lazybones only fishes half days and can't get to some of the distant areas on the southside if that is where the fish show up.

There are many excellent charterboats. Some that I can recommend are:

Vivienne, Elizabeth, Karen Sue, Breakaway, Capt. Mark, Westlake.

Good motels are:

Royal Atlantic
Born Free
Beachcomber
Briney Breezes

Check out the following site for more info one boats and accomodations.

Royal Atlantic has 2 types of lodging. Rooms, which are nothing special. And condos, which are nice for the wife. Can't beat their location.

I like to stay over by the partyboats, but the motels aren't as fancy.... Nice for when you wake up at 745am though....

There is actually a place in Montauk with a spa, Gurney's, but it is out of my price range. They do time shares though, and if I were there for a month, I would see if they have some way of renting time shares that folks can't utilize.

Sea Otter has a new boat coming at some point this year. They claim that it is fast enough to fish both forks in a full day trip. That sounds very nice.

Montauk in May

I spoke with Capt Joel from the sea Otter yesterday at the show in raritan. his new boat will definetly be ready for the Fluke season. He does half day Fluking and night eeling, great Captain and crew. be careful with accomadations in Montauk, there are some real dives, I would not take my wife there last year because her taste differs a whole lot on whats acceptable than mine.I have not found anything really nice yet. still looking good luck

My advice would be to hit the party boats the day the season opens and continue on for as many days as you can.
In an average season over the past few years the chances of connecting with the doormats was a bit better at the beginning of the season.

Guys,
another alternative for lodging is Daunt's albatross, either east or west. Not as fancy as the Royal's condos, but clean, neat, and resonable. Plus its right in town, so your wife can run up the cresit card balances :)

The fish are there, the past 2 yrs. I pin hooked there for bass and fluke before the recreational boats could fish! Loads of stripers and fluke-no problem! Watch your dates-or oelse it will be catch-N-release!

TJL65, I usually make it out to Montauk at least 1 time a year for a long weekend. There is a hotel on Old Montauk Highway called The Wavecrest, nice place, I have been going there for many years, with the wife when I had one :), with girlfriends, daughter, etc. They have a website - www.wavecrestonocean.com

It is an older hotel with some unique architecture, esp. the roof lines. It's is clean, comfortable, and has reasonable rates off season, May. It is right on the ocean so you have great views, and has an indoor pool as well. All rooms have fully equipped kitchenettes with coffemakers, and outside on the beach there are a couple of BBQ grills and tables should you want to cook your catch. The place is made up of several buildings and I would suggest the building called "Waters Edge".

I am a somewhat seasoned traveler, and I usually stay at 4 or 5 Star Resorts. Don't get me wrong, this is not one, but again, is quite comfortable and very much old Long Island and Montauk.

Also, don't miss having at least one breakfast at Salavar's.
