Wanted some insight on trailering my boat to Montauk this week (Wednesday/Thursday). I have 17 foot key west. Is it worth it for this size boat? Is there enough to do inside the harbour for a day or two on the boat? Can I leave the harbor and fish during the day outside?

Yes, weather permitting. Some of the rips under the lighthouse can get bumpy, but a 17' should be fine as long as it's not blowing too hard.

In order to launch your boat you need a permit. This costs about $100.00 and may be purchased in town during the week.

According to my hotels website they have their own ramp.

Hunt n' Fish - Thanks. If I wanted to target bass during the morning and daytime would the lighthouse rips be advised or is there somewhere more appropriate give the boat size?

Montauk Harborside.

From the website.
"And fishermen are always welcome at the Harborside.
Free access to a neighboring boat ramp and plenty of
parking for your boat and trailer. Complimentary
wash-down service available, too!"

Gino, Nikoli,

The Montauk Harborside is right near the East Hampton Town Ramp. I'm sure that's the "neighboring boat ramp" and technically, you do need a town permit to launch there (this year I believe they went up to $200 for non-residents). Maybe as long as you launch and park your vehicle at the motel, you won't get bothered, but they do ticket down there. I got one in December when we were out there duck hunting.

Nikoli,

As long as it's calm, you can fish pretty much anywhere in the daytime out there. Most of the rips aren't that bad that you'll get thrown around too much. They use flats boats in the Montauk Guide House show, and they're about the same size with no freeboard. At night, if you have light SW winds, you'd be fine fishing along the North side. The land protects you from the wind and the ocean swells.

Plenty of fishing to do out there in a 17' boat.
