Has anyone ever witnessed a mola mola hook up ? I was fishing on a party boat, private charter out of Pt. Lookout on Monday. Fishing was slow to say the least. 5 or so fluke for the whole boat by 2pm. Then I hear the big splash off the stern. I thought some jokester was doing cannonballs from the top deck. Not to be, a second jump by an approximately 300lb Mola proved to be the cause. I'm not sure if the line snapped or the mates cut it but it was a site to see. Like a cannonball exploding from the water. It didn't jump high but made quite a splash. When I got home I checked on the edibility of the things. They are laden with parasites and worms and the meat is insipid. Not edible at all but some people dry it and boil it down and it has the texture of crabmeat. Not sure why anyone would want to eat such a creature.

Frank,
yeah, I've seen it happen and the fight is impressive! Its not as uncommon as you might think, particularly when sharking in the spring, when there are lots of jelly combs in the water. The sunfish eat jelly fish and sometimes, when a lot of jelly has built up on a shark bait they will take it.

Sunfish

Frank,

Funny as it might seem, my brother hooked up with one a couple weeks ago while we were sharking. Took about 30 minutes to get to boat but actually gave a good fight. Took a bread and butter combo, first time I ever heard of such a thing otherwise hard to believe.

Here's a sunfish story you might not believe , but I swear that it's true. I hooked one up at the 2nd Meadowbrook bridge several years ago while bass fishing. Had to pull anchor and chase it. There were 2 of them cruising along in the back bays...

MBill, did you chase it or did it tow you? (lol). All I can say is seeing that Mola hook up made for some excitement on a rather slow fluke trip. It also reminded me to keep my pole in the rod holder as you never know what will pull an expensive rod/reel combo into the drink.
